I never felt like I needed to tune the R; it makes plenty of torque bone stock for what I'm doing (track days and AX a few times throughout the year). Do I want to tune the R? Maybe; but not until the factory 6y/72K bumper-to-bumper warranty has expired. |

My actual daily driver, a '22 Arteon, makes more torque than the Golf that shows up even sooner in the rev range, gearing is shorter and there's slightly more peak power than the Golf. It's also a 2.0T engine with the same AWD system as the Golf. It even has frameless doors and it's a liftback. I paid about the same amount of money I would have spent on a WRX GT. So, am I still not the demographic of the WRX? Am I really expecting too much from a sporty turbo car displacing 2.4L? I think not. |

![]() I drove a mod'ed 06 GG WRX; downpipe + VF43 + aftermarket TMIC. That was fun for a while.
But, it's 2024, a 2.4T that doesn't make 300 ft-lbs straight from the factory is a missed opportunity to leverage that extra displacement. It's a turn off. That's all I'm saying. We know anybody can slap a tune on any of the other 2.0T turbo mills out there and they will make just as much power than a tuned FA24DIT, if not more. That's not where it's at (at least, as far as I'm concerned); I prefer to get something I can live with, for a while, with the bone stock factory tune and hardware. I'd rather spend the bulk of my "play" money on suspension, brakes, wheels and tires. Quote:
![]() I must be satisfied with stock power; if not, I walk away and I get something else with the amount of power I know I will be happy with for a while. However, I'd have no problem/qualm picking up a *used* VB for the express purpose of tuning it to the moon and back. No problem there. |

![]() I feel like if it were that simple it would've been done already, at least where Subaru's use of the Boxer motor is concerned. When they did the S209 they only pushed it to 341hp/330 lb-ft. I don't find your request for a WRX to make that power at $30k price point to be reasonable. The engine just struggles, especially with emissions and such.

![]() I dunno what you guys are looking at but Golf R is that STI money, like 10k more than base wrx. I bought bare/base. I did slap carbotech pads 1921 too, front and rear. And ets intake, plus ap and tune. 22k miles of pure e50 fun.
And what other 2.0t that isnt R can you slap a tune on and make it 400/450? Again, we talking about a $28.4k msrp NEW car here. I mean GTI is 33k so.. and fwd. Last edited by Apb_pools; 05-15-2024 at 09:20 PM. |

It could be making the exact same 271 peak HP but still make power under the curve. Nothing worth doing is easy; it's a challenge with emissions and other constraints and I get it. |

![]() And its engine packs a punch too. It's likely the performance bargain of the decade.
I would have to sell something to get it though and I'm not ready to sell the Golf yet and the Arteon is just too new/fresh to sale at this point. |

![]() So, again, its a 34k Hyundai that makes same power, is fugly unless you are born in S Korea or Japan (maybe phillippines too), and is fwd. So i am paying 5-6k extra to have a Hyundai warranty over Subaru warranty?
I dont follow, whats the criteria here unless hating on WRX is the main one? Someone explain it to me like i aint getting it. EDIT: nothing racist about this comment unless one assumes, 1. that only one race populates these countries, and 2. that i was referring to the race and not nation states which build ugly cars, where Elantra N would be considered on of the best looking for sure. Google japan traffic or s korea traffic or phillipines traffic and look at the CARS in the image. When one sees race first, everything is racist. I take offence when a racist calls me a racist, so thought the need to clarify what is what here and who is who. ![]() Last edited by Apb_pools; 05-16-2024 at 07:22 PM. As it's been since the WRX hit our shores, they wan't STi+ at WRX price. They are almost totally ignoring the entire picture. WRX has it's place. It has filled that place better than any other car in the segment.....since it came out. The STI was the bigger puncher and had proper competition for a good while. That competition didn't sell nearly as well and the arguments for why were/are endless. People can't seem to grasp that this WRX was meant to hold the same place it has always done and the "next" STI would have punched higher, as it has always done. The discontinuation of the STI was sad for sure. I was ready to be first in line. But, it didn't make it and to do anything significant with the WRX may be a waste of effort at this point. Things are shifting, I think, unpredictably right now for them to sink more money into something their is no guarantee and they even basically said it in their lastest release about EVs. And now I'm rambling. It's late. I'm tired. I have to be at the station early. Good night. |

I like the linearity of the VB torque curve, even if it doesn't come on particularly low. I think the best way I could describe the current power is "manageable", which might be the updated 2024 way of saying "adequate", which is neither exciting nor a slouch. I had a 2024 OBXT loaner and the only good thing about that car was when the turbo pulled. As someone who enjoys the play at midrange, I think the VB power would suit me fine, but I recognize I don't speak for everyone. |
