Question MY99+ tranny on a MY98?

I'm posting this for a friend the tranny on his MY98 RS is pretty much fried. The TO bearing has worn a nice groove in the housing (and something else is wrong with it). Apparently this is something common with the MY98 trannies, but I've never seen anyone post about it here.

Is it possible to use an MY99+ tranny on an MY98? I know the bolt patterns for the trannies are different, but can it be done?
