Question Scratched driver side window

The title says it all, I noticed it yesterday. I cleaned the windows a few days ago so I know it’s not dirt or anything else. I can fell it with my fingernail. The scratches are about an inch apart and go up the window. The deeper parts of the scratches are at the bottom of the window and they fade out as you go up to the top. The bottom of the picture is about three inches from the bottom. They stop about four inches from the top. I don’t hear any grinding noise or anything of that nature when the window goes up or down. I don’t remember seeing them when I got the car about a month ago, so I’m really not sure when it started. I don’t want to take the door apart to have a look seeing how Subaru is touchy with their warranty and the door still has the factory speakers in it. I did look under the window molding and didn’t see any thing that might be causing it. Oh and the window is only scratched only on the outside, the inside is fine. So my question is has anybody seen this before and know what the exact cause is? And is their anyway that it can be prevented in the future?

its from the window regulator.

take it to the dealer that looks pretty bad, they should replace the window and the regulator under warranty.

its not uncommon to see that on a subaru though, expecially on the rs coupes.

Part of the joy of owning frameless windows. My 98 neon is like that.

Yeah, I have that too on my coupe, but it's far enough back that it doesn't interfere with my vision, so I don't really care too much about it. It's just another thing that makes my car look slow.

Thanks for the input. It doesn’t look as bad in person, you can only see it if your close. (I had to get it at an angel so it could be seen in the picture.) I plan on having a dealer look at it this week when I get the cruse control recall fix done.

I have the exact same thing on my 99 RS. I'm at 57K but I don't think it's covered. I'll find out next Wednesday when I bring the car in for that coolant additive thing that was sent out in the latest SOA bulletin.

Bump for the dealer man. I stopped by the dealer today and they ordered me a new window and pads. Parts they ordered incase anybody is curious: LF door glass, stabilizer pads and wiper strips. BUT they said that this can only be done once under warranty. If it happens again he said that I’ll have to pay for it and the charge would be around $400.

This is SO annoying.

My MY98RS had the problem, and I paid for the parts myself at 50K to do the replacement.

My MY02WRX (Purchased in 01) had the same problem but that car was totalled in an accident. I did complain about it to Subaru, right before I got hit though.

Thankfully, just five minutes ago, my dealer just called me to tell me that my window and felt replacements will be covered by the warrantee. Of course this WRX that I currently drive has 35,500 miles on it....so the bumper-to-bumper warrantee covers this.

I made a concerted effort to complain to SOA on this, and the dealer service writer wrote about my concerns in the computer so that it is documented. In the past , SOA hasn't been that great with customer service so we all need to be sure that they hear our complaints, especially when they want to ask $30K-plus for an STi.

Good luck. Lean on the dealer and get them to fix it!

Just contacted Bredemann Subaru about the window and they said it wasn't covered under the warranty. Sucks.

Also of note. I tend to keep glass cleaner and paper towels in my car. If my windows are dirty, and clean them then and there.

What happens is dirt gets trapped in the stabilizer pads and eventually enough builds up to start scratching the windows.
