Post What is the turbo that Holley is selling in the vendor classifieds?

Is this a VF22 by IHI. I really want to buy it, and I was going to buy it until I found out that the nomenclature was different on the turbo. I am worried, I wan't one like Imprezers! Any input anybody?

I asked Holly which turbo it was and she had no idea and had no info whatsoever on the turbo. Just an FYI, I'll be doing turbo group buy from Apexi Japan soon. It will be an AX53B60 ball bearing IHI turbo good for 350 HP as well. Price will be under $1000 shipped to your door. Still seeing if there is even an interest and I know people are going to ask me a million questions which I want to be prepared for.

I spoke with someone from their shop this week, and it is NOT a VF22. It is a hybrid, and they were not interested in telling any secrets. I don't blame them, but a little information would be nice.

Holly/Jim at TEC are selling a VF22 which has been modified... but it is still basically a VF22. TARMAC has one on his car and it is definitely a VF22. I cannot imagine that this is a bad thing... the VF22 is a monster turbo with good spool time and a good CFM rating considering the sub-1000 dollar price. His car rocks with it on there.

Instead of being bombarded with redundant questions Dan, how about you just lay out all the info you know about the Apex-I unit in relation to the Subarus.

Well, still waiting on more info but here's what I know. Apexi has two units available. An AX53B60 and AX53B70. The later is twice the cost of the first unit has a special "zero tolerance" compressor wall and is more for race use (w/more lag but more top end). The AX53B60 for the EJ20 is a street kit capable of around 350 hp. The trim size is "20" for the compressor wheel and is probably more than enough for most people's needs.

What size is it closest to on the IHI chart at www.ihi-turbo.com ? The RFH55 or RFH6 is a nice size, but I have no idea how that relates to this "custom" one.

Based on What I heard, I'm betting that turbo that TEC is selling is an RHF6, not a VF22. But, if they won't tell you what it is, why would anyone buy from them for crissake? The turbo pictured above is an RX6- these were the original IHI ball-bearing racing turbos. Don't know what the specs are for it. From the other pictures that were posted though, it would seem that you might have some problems sealing the turbine exhaust since the adapter to fit our downpipes doesn't seem to have all the bolts.

Man, I wish they would give us a straight answer on this. Their price is good, but I would really like to know what I am getting into by giving them my hard earned cash.

People have had good results with straight VF22s, so what I want to know is how does this turbo improve on the design? Do we trade some top end response for a bit less lag? Or is it the other way around?

The IHI53B60 might have to be ran at high pressure levels to hit 350 hp. However the IHI53B60 is an awesome turbo I put a pair on my friends R32 skyline. In regards to Jim & Holly at TEC I would definetly trust them I have bought at least a dozen turbos from them in the past and they have always bent over backwards to help me.

I still think Holly and Jim have a VF22.. there are several people around here who have them and they claim they are the VF22 units.

Anyway, what good is the bigger turbo anyway if the engine isnt made to handle it? Even if you DO get the thing pushing twice as much air through the manifold, you will still be limited by the head, gaskets, exhaust and pre-turbo cats, so I am not sure what the benefits of swapping the turbo are anyway other than the fact that it might be more efficient or have a lesser duty cycle. Even so, why replace the compressor now? Why not wait until the factory unit gets nice and baked then make the swap?

This is a waste of money for a brand new WRX IMHO.
