Default A story about my stolen car, but... (Pix inside)

Not sure what I should put for the title. It is truely the most wierd expereience ever. Figure I should share this. (It does have a some what happy ending, just read on)

My 2002 wrx was stolen last night from woodbridge, NJ (out side the parking lot of U-YEE japanese resturant. Me and my friends arrived at around 8:30PM. Around 9 I got a call from my family saying a police office called and said the car might be stolen. I rushed out and saw some other cars parked at my spot. I really don't know how to describe my feelings at the time. I am sure most of you should know what is like when something that values the most for you is gone...just like that.. When the police called, they spotted the car in Irvington. They saw something suspicious about the car and driver so they ran the plate and notified my home. NO!! They didn't stop the car at all.. I filed the report right away and it was the saddest night ever...my friend kept me company and we chatted for almost the entire night..

Around noonish today, I received the call from poilce department saying the car has been found by UMDNJ police (university of medicine dmostry, something like that). I immediatly contacted the police and found out that the car was towed to a local facility. I was wondering how did they found the car..and he told me.... LOJACK.... I was shocked.. I've never even dreamt of having such a system installed. I puchased this car used from a dealership in bloomfield and it didn't even have an upgraded security. Now all the sudden my car has a Lojack which the dealer wasn't even aware of.

Anyways, so I contacted to towing company and went down to check out the car. It is in good condition I must say. The only exterior damages are the passenger rear door's got a big whole and scratch extended to the rear quarter panel. Front wheel is scrached pretty bad..but not bent or anything.

Inside of the car is kind of a mass..rear seat got torned out, seat belt got cut.. driver and passenger seat's cover got half stripped from the back (you know those zippers, they have been unzipped for some odd reason) Some blood on the rear passenger door, floor and trunk are full of different clothings, swimsuit, night gown, makeup kits, travel packs..etc and none of those belongs to me nor my friends'. The ignition has been tempered obviously so it is not driveable. It seems there were 3 people were in the car cuz there are three wholes burnt by cigarettes on the interio roof panel/lining.

Now, here is the part where I need some of your advises, especially from those who had a similar expereience. Based on my description, it seems the insruance will pay for fixing the car. However, my concerns are I don't know if anything is damaged in either the engine or the transmission, perhaps even the suspension. (cuz there is a big impact on the rear door) I wasn't able to start the car at the time to check. So is there anyway I can check those out or test out before the insurance company do the estimates? What happens if they fix the body and later on I detects the failur in either engine/tranny?
By the brief check, it seems they've braked the car pretty card cuz both front wheel are covered with lots of brake dust and the caliper (I've painted to gold) shows lots of bubbles from extreme overheat.

So what are my chances as far as the engine/tranny is concerned?

appreciated for all the comments and suggestions as of how I should proceed with the rest..

First off, I haven't had a car stolen, so keep that in mind. I have been in accidents where the car was close to totaled, but wasn't, and that's what I'm basing my thoughts on. And yes, my cars mean a lot to me too, don't think I'm just being callous and dismissive, but depending on the situation it may be better to move onto bigger and better.

If I were you, I'd first get the cops to try to fingerprint in the car, look for cigarette butts, and take the blood samples. You never know, they might have left some evidence, who knows, they'll probably never do anything with it, but just in case.

Second, by what you're describing, they drove the crap outta your car. I would be very wary of internal damage, especially after what things look like to you. Unfortunately, I don't know if the ins. co will total the car, but I would say that would be your best option. If that were me, chances are I'd want that to happen, since you really don't know what gremlins might be out there 5k, 10k, 25k miles down the road.

Unfortunately, I don't know if you can make any noise with the ins. co. about possible internal damage, if it isn't broken right now, chances are they won't give you anything for it. However, I have heard that some companies and repair shops will guarantee the work, and you might want to inquire about coverage for internal damage if something breaks. Might not be easy to do, since then you could go out and break the car yourself (not that you'd want to, but that's probably a thought in their head), and collect on the money.

I would see what the total comes back at for the damage, and if it's close, go to a shop that is expensive, and get it totaled. Unless the car is anything more than a regular stock WRX, it's probably not worth the worries going forward.

yeah I would get the car fixed (if they don't total the car or go get an expensive shop) and trade it in...I can't imagine owning a WRX/STI in NJ

Sorry to hear about your car, man. From the way you described the damages, I highly doubt it's close to being totaled. About getting the internals checked out, I would say you should talk about this with your insurance company. I don't see why they wouldn't agree to have it checked out by a good mechanic.

the insurance co. should send an investigater to determine on first sight if the car is repairable or not. if they determine its fixable you should have it thoroughly checked inside and out for damages. if anything have it towed to a subaru dealership for a full run through. do you owe any money on the car or car loans? i had a civic stolen while i was at school in delaware 3 years ago, they found it entirely stripped in philly a month later. at the time i owed 7500 on the loan i had taken out, and the insurance company cut me check for 5000, the blue book value of the car at that time, so long story short, i was 2500 in the hole and carless. lesson learned, gap insurance is worth it. i hope everything works out, if i were you id be so pissed id pay for dna testing on that blood so i could track down the mothereffer and knock his teeth in with a bat. id like to help if this comes to be.

not worth doing that dna stuff. cops are lazy bums that wouldnt help you unless some one died at the crime scence.

from the sounds of it, i think its still repairable. but make sure you talk to your agent about future breakdowns.

Tip: Go to most expensive shop, ask for a check and go to a cheaper yet trusted repair shop.

(Once i choose the most expensive body shop and the insurance co. sent the check to the shop and not to me so i had to get it fixed. Then when i pick up my car, they didnt replace the bumper like quoted and just buff and paint, and you can still see the scratches. Cheap ass bitches)

Also, whats up with NJ and car theft and every car ending up in places like irvington.

sorry to hear man. I wish you the very best. I was curious also as to how it would work if you were to trade your car in even though it's been repaired due to the theft?? Would they give you any less money for it?

Good luck with that.

When my 2003 WRB Sedan was recovered in Irvington (Jan. 04), I assumed that whoever stole it had probably stolen other cars, and most likely had a prior record. So I thought it appropriate to ask if my car had been fingerprinted when I went to IPD to sign the release forms. Without hesitation, the desk sargeant says: "You watch too much CSI. We recover an average of 150 cars per month. I'd have to hire at least (5) people for that, and we'd bankrupt the state of New Jersey with overtime."

The guy in front of me was getting his car fingerprinted though, because it was involved in a shooting. He was mad b/c they wouldn't release his bullet-riddled car. Whatever.

Well I'm glad to know that I can rip out the keyhole and start the car with a flathead screwdriver.

Anyway, have it repaired. Make sure you find a good body shop and have whatever body parts and interior replaced, don't let them bondo anything because you're not driving a POS. Make sure they put it on a frame rack to check that it's straight. If you pay for full coverage make sure to get your money's worth. Ask your insurance company about the drivetrain. If it gets running and sortly after picking up the car you find gears grinding or something is wrong with the motor you should be able to get them to take care of it.

you can't be serious! That is BS! It sholdn't matter how many cars they recover, they should dust it for prints if it can lead to an arrest no?!

Not unless the car has been involved in a homicide, robbery or other "real" felony.

Another bump for confirmation here. This would be the first 05 sti i know of that was clipped. Although, if it was found 4 blocks away, the immobilizer might have worked! They could have pushed it with another car and taken the wheels... Rear bumper cover and 4 BBSs = $2300?

Gee, maybe if you start actually arresting people that number would drop a little bit. Whattaya think? ********.

Sorry about your car man. Scary ****. I'm in Woody all the time.

I do not suggest doing that. Some if not most insurance companies will write the check out to the body shop and vehicle owner (this includes finance companies) they think you are using. That means multiple signatures needed before the check can be deposited. Plus, if the "other" body shop was to used and need to order more parts, they wont be able to get it covered since the ins company will be thinking your are using someone else (the body shop that gave you the highest quote).

As far was what to do, tell the ins company you want to have the vehicle inspected by a dealership or a shop to make sure everything is ok. Let them know you are very worried about the dirvetrain. If there are damages ins. will cover it. It just needs to be proven that the problem didnt exist prior to thieft. I did worked with ins. companies previously.

They will not bother dusting the vehicle for prints. Dont even bother asking. I have asked police numerous time and I always get the same answer/ sometimes no answer. I have been trying to get a petition or protest going for stolen vehicles (esp in NJ). I am going to try to do this in Audiworld as well since they are highly stolen.

They will also not delcair his car as a total loss. It probably will not meet or even come close to the % needed to declair it a loss.

Sorry to hear about your car. Best of luck with it.

Ugh, I had a car stolen back in 1999 from Philadelphia. It was found outside of a chop shop in Camden. Several "young men" decided (after watching Fast and Furious no doubt) that it would a great idea to strip stolen cars of performance type parts and build cars for themselves for free. There were several imports in various states of tune all cut up and one that was clearly being built up from the others. Coilovers hanging on the wall and all kinds of madness (I saw the police photos at court). I ended up getting in the guys face out in the hall after court because they only gave him 1 year probation and $500 restitution!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was pretty upset with the judge as well but remained professional. I explained to him that if you never punish anyone for these crimes they will continue to happen. You have to come up with some type of deterrent and $500 aint going to cut it. If I had come out and shot the guy or something I would be on trial for murder or assault. What makes it fair for him to steal and cut to pieces my first new car that I paid for monthly, financed + down payment, washed every week, waxed every 2 or so, protected from door dings, used synthetic oil, upgraded suspension, tires, stereo system and so on. The point is the amount of time energy and effort I put into the car cannot be recovered. The insurnace company paid me out and I got another new car but it was a painful process. Waiting a minimum of one month for the car to be missing before insurance pays, the hassle alone of sharing one car with my wife is enough to make you want to stuff this guy in a hole. Unfortunately the experience tainted my love for cars and car enhancement. My WRX has stock stereo equipment, stock wheels, I put a few easy upgrades (gotta love turbo cars for return on performance $) in place and that's it. No wild body kits or anything that I am going to cry over if it's stolen or destroyed. I just don't want to be hurt again *sniff, grabs tissue*. My new motto is buy it as fast and as perfect as you can up front so that when it goes, the insurance payment is equitable and move on.

i keep on hearing people getting checks from their insurance and cashing and not fixing things. Even my friends have had that happen from the same company. But when its my turn they send the check to the shop.

Anyone have a clue for why they sent the check to the shop instead of me?

I recommend taking it to a subaru dealership because that is usually the most expensive plus its most trusted since they work on subys.
