The engineering costs millions of dollars. You think a bunch of PhDs who are experts in the fields of compressor and turbine aero, bearings, and rotor dynamics come cheap? Lots of money spent in testing and validation. Then more money spent in process development to manufacture a quality product.
Go ahead, keep on buying the knock offs. Companies like Garrett who actually develop new product will just stop. I've seen it happen to plenty of small aftermarket companies who were the innovators. The knock-offs drove them out of business and then people complain there's no new products coming out for their cars.
Has Borg Warner done anything since EFR? I saw a Pulsar knock-off of a GTX which has a very distinct turbine housing feature. I guarantee you Pulsar has no clue why Garrett made that feature; Pulsar just 3d scanned and copied.
