Finally, some more concrete results about how quick the GTR really is: "From medium revs in 4th gear, ... the Porsche crawled forward."
The 997 Turbo also crawls my M5 from a roll, so the GTR and M5 may have similar rolling acceleration, which in turn indicates that the Z06 is quite a bit quicker, ending that debate. |

The other thing one needs to consider also is gearing... Perhaps the revs at which they started with in the GTR or 911 was unsuitable. At 4th gear at the speeds they were going, the GTR may have been further from its power band than the 911, which might explain the 911 getting the jump. I know some articles have mentioned that the 911TT has less turbo lag than the GTR, no doubt, thanks to those VTG turbos it packs. Some cars are just geared so unusually that 4th gear in one car is more equivalent to 5th gear in another car or even 3rd in another car. Look at how the STi is geared for example. Our 4th gear feels more like third in other cars that are geared more conventionally. |

Has anyone compared the GT-R with the old R-34 or even R-34 Z-tune (I know the Z-tune is $150,000, but its supposedly the top of the line Skyline.)

There is no question, if I hit the lottery tomorrow and could buy any car, it would be the GT-R. I'd get an exotic as well but for a reliable daily driver supercar, the GT-R seems to be the best out there.

Agreed. It'd be hard deciding between that and the Z06, but I would like to find out a little bit about the tuning situation on the GT-R before I'd make a decision.

True, but again if I had the $ it would depend where I was living. A Z06 in NJ wouldn't get used 4-5 months of the year for traction reasons (ice storm outside my window right now)

I just got to sit in one of these beast last weekend and I will say thee is much more to offer from this car than from a big V8 RWD domestic. If you want pure speed, get the Z06. If you want an all around monster thats WAY more practical.... Get the GT-R!!
483HP at 10 psi is what I was told by the Nissan project manager!! Think about the potential of this thing. IMHO, this car is on a completely different level than the Z06!! "a new kind of supercar one with no competitors" is exactly what this thing is. No question, hands down!! |

GTR all the way for me. (close second if money was no object would be a Ford GT) - both are "super cars" i can almost afford to have serviced. |

It seems like the GT-R is somewhere between a Vette and a 911 market.
The base vette is ~$45k? with ~430 hp. The "base" GT-R is at ~$60-70K with ~473 hp. The Z06 is ~$70k+ with 505 hp. What will the V-SPEC have? I'm guessing more than the Z06, in price and power. 911 is similar power wise to the base GT-R but costs alot more. In the end, I'll take a GT-R. |

I dunno, I'm a hardcore Porsche enthusiast - if *I* won the lottery, I'm still getting my Porsche GT2 or Porsche 911 Turbo. There's something that is rarely discussed in driving comparos and that's refinement (the 911 platform has been continually revised and improved for decades) and long-term durability (I'm not sure how reliable all those electronics in the GT-R will be...).
Great job, though, for the GT-R - the Porsche seems to be the standard that everyone wants to beat and it's a good thing when a new car comes around that pushes the envelope. Ian |

In any event the GT-R is impressive especially when bang-for-buck is considered. |
