How about we use some numbers instead of the useless phrase "burning oil".

I'm sorry, I wasn't being clear. What I'm saying is that these engines do not all burn oil, and that they don't all burn oil during the break-in process.

I have evidence of just such a non-oil-burning ngine sitting in my Impreza right now.

And this is an example of why I do respect you. You are civil and polite. And even though we disagree on many things, you don't disrespect or do any of the things that some others are known for.

I just hope Subaru finds the real cause of the issue and implements a fix for it. I really want to keep my car well beyond 100,000 miles, but not if it's consuming large amounts of oil.

Changed break-in oil at 3k and it came on around 4.5-5k I believe.

So I've put approximately 10k miles on my short block replacement and it appears as though my engine is consuming oil twice as fast as it did when I first got the car back. It was consuming at a rate of about 1/4 quart per 1000 miles and now it's up to about 1/2 quart in the same amount of miles. My oil light now comes on anywhere from 800 to 1000 miles after being topped off. I'll give it another 15k to 20k miles before It's back to the point of consuming the same amount as the original block and heads.

That's discouraging. I wouldn't blame you for selling the car and abandoning the brand forever. That's what I did with VW. It's only fair. A manufacturer needs to earn your business, and clearly Subaru hasn't been able to do that (although I will give them credit for trying; they did replace your short block, after all).

Yes, it is very discouraging indeed. I'm thinking that my replacement short block was most likely built before Subaru made any revisions, thus the reason that its suffering the same problems as my original.

As far as me ever buying another Subaru goes, as of right now, the chances are very slim. Besides the whole oil consuming debacle, there's honestly not a whole lot I really like about my Subaru anyway. To me, its only redeeming factor is its AWD. Then there's the fact
that at least a few people in my life would think I was total crazy for even considering purchasing another Subaru after the ordeal I've been through.

Maybe not all, maybe just some depending on what happened at manufacturing or when it was manufactured or some kind of quality control error...something along those lines I would think

I'm sure if you look back just about everyone has posted their build date.

You have a fairly early build date... Looks like you got one of the good ones. Auto or manual transmission? I'm betting on auto...

My 4/12 build date has 41k on it. 5MT, and generally I drive like I stole it. But a lot of my driving is interstate at 72-80mph, only about 25-30% in town driving.

Total lifetime oil consumption is about 2.0qts. My last oil change was 6800 miles consuming 0.2qts. AMSOIL XL 0W-20.just waiting for my Blackstone report

Honestly, I have very little faith that Subaru will ever be able to fix my engine. Even if they offered to install another new short block, which they probably wouldn't, I feel like I would have the same problems all over again. Subaru has not been able to show me that they can fix my oil consumption or that they even completely understand what is causing the problem. At this point I feel as though I am better off trying to sell the car before the consumption gets really bad again and cut my losses. I'm sure some of you will probably disagree with me, but there comes a time when you have to say enough is enough. Obviously, if I'm unable to sell the car in the near future and the consumption gets really bad again, I will see my dealership about another repair just so the next poor sap to own the car doesn't get totally screwed over.

That may very well be the key difference as to why you don't have an oil burner and I do. I drive 90 - 95% in town, short trips. If that is the biggest reason for my consumption, then I don't want a car with an engine that can't handle that style of driving.

I still think qc and manufacturing are much more key to how well or poorly these mass produced appliances operate.
