What he asked was:

Quote:

What I gave him is directly from the manuel.

What n2xlr8n is quoting is the standard .004in per 1" of bore formula used. So if we do the math with this we get:

99.5mm bore = 3.917in

3.917x.004=.015668in

.20-.25mm/.0079-.0098in top ring
.37-.52mm/.015-.020in second ring
.20-.50mm/.0079-.0098in oil ring

So the second ring is not to tight if you go by what he is saying. In my experience building 14k redline engines with smaller bores is to not go by Chevy specs.

Pardon me; I may have touched a nerve.

I wasn't criticizing what you were providing, only providing input into his choice of gap......and if you've built engines, you'd know the "formula" has nothing to do with Chevrolet per se, but with ring type, bore size and application. I do not particularly care what you think of my opinion, but if you're so sensitive, I'd suggest trying another forum.

What kind of 14k redline engines have you built? Motorcycles? Are you and Ron @ Axis buddies? Aren't you the guy that stated the STi cylinders were nikasil? I thought so.

WOW, I guess I didnt think I was trying to fire back at you with this. I was pointing out that he asked for specs from the manuel I gave them to him .
Then you said they were all to tight quoting no factual data but just look it up "it's online" and I disagreed with you because all he is going to easily find is the 4:1 type of spec. Which you stated was to tight even in the stock specs which was incorrect as the math shows.

Yes, motorcycles which use much of the same tech.

And they are not Nicasil? What are they then? I dont know where you are getting this but what contects was it used?

As with the rest of your little flame fest here, I see you are representing what the core of NASIOC hates slamming people who are not even involved with this? I shared a couple of emails with Ron but they were concerning cams that he is working on for the STI. What the hell does he have to do with this?

Take a pill and relax Sally

1&2) No argument here. I was offering an educated opinion; non-factual? Hardly. Ask any reputable engine builder if he'd run .009-.0015" on the top ring on a forced induction application with a bore of that size. If he says yes, stay away from him. Math? When's the last time you've seen a linear regression make a 8.80 1/4 mile pass?

3) I can't think of any passenger car application that has ever used nikasil liners; You stated it, not I. They are <gasp> cast iron.

4) Call it a flame fest if you will, I was simply offering an opinion, at which point you chime in like you had something to defend, which you didn't. Your data that you provided to the member was factual, I was not attacking it. My poke at Ron was just that...a poke. He knows I think he's full of dung.

I'll take one of your pills, Wilma

Sincerely, have a nice day, and thanks for your input to the community.

There are high performance cars that have used Nikasil coatings in the past. The Carrera GT uses Nikasil with its aluminum block. The Lotus Espirit also does.

n2xlrn I think you took whatever bikerboy was saying a little too personally somehow and turned this thread into garbage... personal insults aren't helpful to anyone.

Okay. I think I have run afoul of the nasioc buddy-club.

I did not take it personally, fwiw. If bikerboy wants to use the .004" per inch of bore on his Subaru, go right ahead. Be sure and report back how it turned out.

edited for proper english context...old english, of course...I'm not an Ivy Leaguer
