Question Thinkin' about the MRT full exhaust setup - whatcha think?

For those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about, check out http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/Foru...ML/000688.html . The group buy is at http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/Foru...ML/000190.html . It's not stainless, which kinda sucks, although I could get stainless for an extra $250. So about $750 total or so (incl shipping) for everything - header, high flow cat, mid pipe, and muffler in stainless.

Or, I could get everything except the header in stainless, and then get the header Jet Hot coated. I'll have to email Jet Hot and see how much that would run. Hmmmmm.

What do y'all think? I think my biggest misgiving is that I don't really know what this thing sounds like.

Pat,
I've been having the same dilema. It's almost to good of a deal to pass up. If I do get it, the I'll be wrapping the headers. I don't know about jet hot. but all in all, 520 for a complete exhaust, sounds good to me. I'm actaully hoping there is going to be another group buy later, this one is too close to the holidays. Well If I were you, I'd get it. Cuz I'm me, and I'm about 60-80% going to get it myself.

I just double-checked the Street Prepared rules online and made sure I could do this and stay in CSP. Good to go - exhaust is free, just has to terminate behind the driver somewhere.

I emailed Jet Hot ( www.jet-hot.com ) with a quote request, we'll see what they have to say. I'm guessing a couple hundred bucks. I have Jet Hot coated headers on my Mustang and they've held up very well over the years. I'm starting to get some flaking/light rust on the flanges, so I'll probably take them off this winter and have them re-coated. I'm pretty sure they have a lifetime guarantee on anything they coat, assuming you don't mess with it (weld on it or something like that).

Anyway, I agree with you that this appears to be a deal that's too good to pass up.

pat,
so jet coating will provide the same type of feature as wrapping? Would you also wrap a jet hot coated header? I'm sure you've heard some of the problems people have been having with ce lights being thrown because of too low exhaust gas temps. Thanks for the link.

I don't know exactly, but I would say Yes, Jet Hot would serve the same purpose. It's a metallic ceramic that helps to keep heat in the exhaust. The coating on my Stang's headers is very sharp looking, and it's just the flat grey. The Sterling that they offer that looks like polished aluminum must be pretty sweet.

I would not wrap Jet Hot coated headers, I don't think it would be necessary. Of course, I wouldn't wrap any headers - I've heard too many bad stories about premature rusting with wrapped headers. I'd be especially worried about that with this MRT setup, since the headers are mild steel. Even wrapping stainless isn't all that great - I learned in material science classes a few years ago that "stainless" does not equal "rustless". Anyway...

I'll post here when I find out from Jet Hot what their quote is for the headers.

Pat,
If you make it to the Danbury event on Sunday, you can check out my MRT exhaust.

m750,

I just wanted to make a comment on your quote:

Quote:

Coating the header with Jet Hot, would actually make the exhaust gas hotter (if the exhaust gasses are being checked down stream from the header). You are keeping the hot air in the header, so less escapes, thus hotter gass temp.

There are some pics in this link... http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/Foru...ML/000688.html

I'll try and take some pics of it installed tonight when I change my oil. I did pass emissions, but my the skin of my teeth. That may be due to me never replacing my PCV tho. I got a .48%CO reading with an allowable .48%. Whoops :-D

Edit: CO, not HC

I had been debating whether or not to go to the little get together this weekend. I think I may have just decided I need to attend so I can check out your car, Chuck. I could even bring my Digital8 camera with my nice digital stereo mic and we could make some sound clips to post for people. Of course, I've never done sound clips off the camera, but I'm sure the software I have at home will allow me to do it.

Wow, just looked at Mapquest, Danbury's way the heck over there, huh? Hmmm, I'll have to debate this one a bit.

Wink

Breaka-
That's exactly what I was looking to hear. And from what pat said, it's more durable than wrapping too. So, If Pat says it's good, I believe him. So... anyone got 700 for me?

I've also gotten in on the group buy, I checked out Chuck's exhaust on Sunday. I put a pretty extensive description in http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/Forum6/HTML/200165.html on the Legacy Forum.

I still haven't heard from Jet Hot in reply to my online quote request. (Aside: Doesn't that piss you guys off when companies clearly don't pay any attention to their website? If you're going to make a dam website with a page specifically for quote requests or customer service, then use it!!! ) I'll try to remember to call them tomorrow so I can actually speak to someone directly. I'm guessing $200 or so for Jet Hot on the headers. Having seen what Chuck's looked like, I may forego the Jet Hot - his headers looked very clean, even without any paint on them (which he said burned off within a few weeks). I'll decide once I get a quote from them.

Just found out about another option that might be cheaper and easier to manage. There's a place called Air Born Coatings ( www.airborncoatings.com ) that has a branch in East Hartford, CT. They do an aluminum ceramic coating that is basically the same kind of stuff that Jet Hot does. I'm going to call them tomorrow, too, and see what they have to say. The headers are pretty big, so I imagine shipping costs will be significant if I have to ship them to/from Jet Hot. With this place I can just drive them on up to East Hartford and save those shipping costs.

Another option would be POR-20 ( http://www.por15.com/hightempcoatings.html ), which is stuff you can do yourself. However, I posted some questions about these various options over on the Mustang BB I go to, and one guy said POR told him they don't recommend POR-20 for headers, only for manifolds. He said he had applied it per the instructions and it all flaked off, and that POR told him the POR-20 can't expand quickly enough to keep up with the expansion properties of a header pipe. I'll probably end up calling them, too, just to see what they have to say.

I appreciate the update. Well, I might have to make a trip out then. I don't want to put them on with out some sort of heat loss protection / rust protection.
