Default more n00bness OR my car makes a whining sound!

Hey all,

This isn't as much of a problem but a query. I have a 2-day old 2.5TS and every since i drove it out of the lot, i heard a high pitched whining sound. sometimes i could hear it, sometimes it couldn't. It's very faint.

Usually i hear it when slowing down and the whine goes from high pitched to lower high pitched whine, so i think it's matching the engine rpm's... when i gas it, i can sometimes hear it, and it's raising in pitch...

I did a walk around while the car was one and finally realized the sound was coming from the exhaust.

Do other's have this sound? It actually sounds kinda cool and electical... but it does sound abnormal...

thanks,

Does it sound like "WOOO WOOO"? If so, you gots some whistle tips, y0. j/k

Actually it sounds like a similar problem that some people have had with the stock wrx muffler. Time for an aftermarket exhaust!

I know that my 02rs makes a sort of "Electrical sound" when accelerating and decelerating. but this is the belts. It has done it when stock, and after i replaced my pulleys.

When the car was stock, and also when i only had an axleback exhaust i noticed a high pitched "Feedback" type noise, super high pitch, like a continuous dog wistle or something!! coming from the exhaust when the car was at idle. I dont believe i have noticed it since i have replaced the headers and midpipe.

Hey guys,

I did a search and i think the whining noise is actually coming from the rear (and maybe front too) differential. I thought at first it was from the exhaust since i had my head in the rear left corner of the car. but as I moved over to the right side, the sound stayed "in front" of me, and when i look under the car, there's really nothing but the big differential in front....

Any opinions? sound normal? this at least give explaination to the whole RPM/speed matching behaviour to the sound...

Um, the guy has a brand-new stock TS, and not a WRX. Also, the "whistle" that people have with the WRX muffler is when the shut off the car. The final "puff" of exhaust from the engine causes the muffler to whistle.

mr_yellow - it could be that even though your car is new, you've got a bad wheel bearing. Does the "whine's" pitch match the speed of the car, or does it follow the RPM's of the engine? From what you've posted, it matches the speed of your car.

Sounds like a wheel bearing to me.

I think the sound is matching the speed of the car... Say, when i'm speeding up going down a hill, and i'm not gasing it, i can faintly hear the whine going up in pitch... and pitch goes down when i'm slowing down(letting off on the gas)... but like i said, it's pretty faint and it usually overshadowed by engine throttle or anything else....

If it is the differential, i'm confused as to why it's making a noise when the car is at a standstill... does the differential still move when the car is idling? From the sounds of it, the wheel bearing doesn't move when the car is standing still right? which means there's no way i can possible make a noise...

So the whining sound gets higher and higher pitched as the mph goes up? Or is it RPM dependent where the pitch lowers when the RPM goes down as u shift?

hey man, what happens to the noise when you tap the brakes as the car is moving, does the noise go away for a second or so and then come right back?

Default Another diagnostic question

Do you hear the whine when the car is at a standstill?

The differentials only turn when your car is in motion. When your car is stopped, there is no power going to your differentials.

If you hear this whine when you're stopped, or you give your engine some gas but you're not in gear and not moving, then I'd say it's related to something on your engine like your belts or something.

Thanks for the input guys,

to answer questions:

Mirage: yes, I think it's speed relative. When i'm going fast on highway and i'm NOT on the gas, *if* i hear the noise, it'll be at a higher pitch. Let's say I let the car start slowing down without touching the brake (like rolling to a stop sign from 60 km/h) the noise (if i hear it) will get lower in pitch.

It's easier to distinguish the different pitches at lower speeds, since high speeds tend to just create "high" and "slightly higher" whining noises.

Penphoe: I do hear the noise when the car is at a stand still. More from the rear than the front,

Stubaru: When i tap on the brake, the noise doesn't seem to go away. If i gas it, the noise will dissapear. Not sure if it's cause it's being overshadowed by the EJ25 (that thing has a mean rumble), but i remember many times when I'm cruising at like 60-80 km/h, I'll hear the noise, I lightly tap the gas a bit, the noise is replaced by the engine growl, when i let off on the gas, the car will start to slow down, and respectively, the high pitched whine will come back from a Higher->lower pitch for that brief second i let off the gas and the car slows down.

BTW, this is an automatic car.

And to clarify, the sound is sorta like a jet engine. electrical, but high RPM...

It could coming from the engine, but it's hard to tell cause the engine is that much louder. Thats why i said it was louder in the back.

sorry for all these questions... I have absolutely no experience with Subarus, and don't know anyone with one...

thanks,

Default I'm thinking

fuel pump maybe? That's the only thing eletrical back there, that would make any kind of whining sound. I'd be surprised if you could hear it with a full interior - I could only hear my fuel pump when I had my rear seats taken out and divider between my trunk and interior removed.

Try this - with your car parked at home, turn your key to the "on" position. DO NOT START YOUR CAR. If you hear the same whining sound, then it's probably your fuel pump that's making that whining sound.

I'm not sure if an audible fuel pump is a good or bad thing.

IF you can reproduce the symptoms take the car back to the dealer for diagnosis. The dealer has a set of microphones to track down rogue noises.

Well i say take it back pronto.. you've only had 2 days so there should be absolutely no problems... Demand the problem be fixed or a new car. Simple as that.. get what you paid for...and nothing less.
