Replace stock EGT probe with a aftermarket probe?
Is it possible to replace the stock egt probe, in the up-pipe, with a new thermocouple from an aftermarket EGT gauge? If so how difficult would this be to do? I know normal instructions say to tap the manifold... just looking for other options.
Thanks Justin

I imagine it would be possible, but you would lose your Subaru thermocouple in the process probably causing a CEL. More importantly though, is that you want to measure EGTs as close to the exhaust as possible, so you would be much better to tap the manifold off of the last cylinder on the fuel rail (someone else can confirm where this is, but I think it's passenger side front cylinder.) The last cylinder on the fuel rail is the most likely to go lean therefore the most likely to see the highest EGTs.
If you have your EGT gauge reading from the up-pipe you'll have no way of actually knowing what the exhaust gas temperature is and you'll have no way of comapring your numbers to other members of i-club. Most mechanics can tap the manifold for you for a few bucks, just make sure that you tap somewhere so that the EGT probe will be in an acceptable location when you reattach the manifold. For example, don't tap the "top" of the exhaust manifold otherwise the EGT probe won't fit in the space betwwen the exhaust manifold and the engine, you need a few inches of clearance. |

Not really practical. The Subaru sensor is NOT a thermocouple. It is a very nonlinear thermistor type sensor, and putting a standard thermocouple into the ECU would make it think the EGT's were more than 1700F!
Hope this helps Mark |
