Angry Smoking

Just recently I noticed gray-ish smoke from the exhaust, from what I can tell it only smokes at idle. Sometimes a little, and sometimes its pretty bad. If I let it idle for about 30 seconds then give it some throttle you can clearly see its blue. I have not noticed any consumption. I did replace the entire PCV assembly, no change. Very small amount of oil in the intercooler. My next step is to check the turbo hot side. Bottom end and turbo were replaced <20k ago, also heads were refreshed.

I would look closer at the turbo--especially since you mentioned a spun rod bearing. The turbo would experience the same oil starvation as the crank.

If you think it's the head gasket then do a compression test and cross your fingers.

Turbo was replaced and oil lines cleaned thoroughly. I have a combustion leak detector, would this rule out a head gasket if it passes?

Did you replace the oil cooler when you did the rebuild?

No brand new bottom end. Did a leak down, results were good. Replaced the pcv and the smoking was virtually gone.

I have one more issue now though. After I drive the car and do not let it fully cool off before I drive it again. It will run rich just cruising around in the 13.5 - 8 range. After a few minutes it goes back to normal.

Could that be a bad front 02?

Yes, and make sure to get a Denso o2 and not a Bosch. I had a new Bosch unit and it went bad in under 15k miles with just over 1 year in the car.

Alright thanks, I will be getting the o2 from the dealership so I should be good. From what I have been reading it cant be the rear o2 because that one only monitors the cat in the downpipe? Just looking at diagrams online. Are the front and rear sensors identical? This is what I came up with.

Yes, it's not the rear. No, the front and rear are not identical.

You can buy the Denso version for about a $100 less through amazon. Just look up the part # through the Denso website. It's the exact same sensor as the one Subaru sells (repackages and sells to us for about double the price).

Back again with the same issue. I usually back up my driveway, today I pulled in. Walked around the car and noticed whitish smoke coming from the exhaust. Shut it off. Went back outside maybe 10 minutes later to start it up again. Whiteish smoke coming from the exhaust, not pouring out. Gave it a couple revs and white smoke starts pouring out of the exhaust. I look inside the exhaust and you can see water building up. I never noticed this until I got pro tuned and had a catless up pipe installed. Could that lack of the up pipe cat cause excessive condensation? Coolant level is fine and I never have to add oil during my 4k OCI's.

Also let me add, I see absolutely no smoke on the first startup after its been sitting in the morning. After its been running for about 30 seconds you will see condensation though. I really hope its not the valve stem seals seeing they have less than 20k on them.

One clue, it could be a bad head gasket is, puffs of smoke from radiator.
Take off radiator cap, start car, step on accelerator a few times.
Does the water bubble up on acceleration and/or puffs of white smoke?

Next do a combustion leak detector blue liquid test for $21.24 part number LIS75500.

The blue liquid turns yellow if it has a bad head gasket.

I let the car sit over night, removed the radiator cap. Started the car and the coolant slowly started rising. Got the the top of the fill neck and I gave it some revs and it just pulsed a little bit, didn't bubble out or anything. Since the coolant reservoir for the turbo is above the radiator, wouldn't it overflow no matter what? Also no smoke from the radiator.

If I put my hand about 4 inches into the exhaust I can feel water building up on my hand.

Burped the coolant system, got it to the point where it was not over flowing. Although when I give it some revs the coolant starts to overflow, which seems like its normal to me.

Take a look at youtube vids on white smoke and let us know which one is what you see.

Some are HG or valve seals if it happens at start up only and others are turbo seals.
Oil in down pipe is clue of turbo seals.
