Default UOA: Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 on 2010 WRX (cheap & easily obtained oil)

Surprisingly good results. I was skeptical because I've been told that this oil is crap, justifying the very low price. I paid $20 for 5 quarts.

Engine Mileage: 30,831 mi
Oil Use Interval: 3,126 mi

Engine mods to note:
AEM Intake
Perrin Inlet
Turboback, catted exhaust
Professionally tuned to 301whp/314wtq
Stock internals

NO TRACK DAYS

So this oil should be OK to use for daily driving in the spring.

Pennzoil Platinum has always been a great oil, and a good value. Not sure who told you otherwise.

the good oils set themselves apart @ 5K and beyond (baring a visit to the track where it might degrade sooner).... Any half decent synth oil will make it to 3K

I'd be interested to see the UOA at 5-6K

+1. Probably from the same people that say it causes sludge.

There have been some recent Ultra uoa's and they were good as well. Even with a short interval, most Energy Conserving oils do not stay in grade and these latest Platinum and Ultra uoa's are pretty good. Extend your intervals gradually though (if you're thinking about doing that). You could have high fuel dilution, low viscosity and high wear and Blackstone would still tell you to go another 2,000 miles. The protune probably helps as well. An OTS AP map would likely have more fuel dilution.

Nice filtering with the AEM as well! Ok, I've figured it out. This is a virgin oil analysis. Ha ha, the joke's on us.

Thanks for all the input guys . And yes, this was my first UOA ever, and I'm pretty glad I did it

I am wondering if Pennzoil has made improvements in resistance to shear with the latest production runs.

My last UOA of PP 5W30 (2009 vintage, purchased for $1/qt ), that I ran for 2500 miles over this winter, showed shearing down to a vis of 9.2 (flash was decent, at 380F). And this was in a 100% stock motor, in a 2005 Legacy GT, driven in a sane manner.

^Along with FHI possibly making some improvements to the engine. My car is very tough on oil and always shows elevated oxidation and nitration.

I do it to help deplete the worlds oil supply, so we have to drill here in the US, so it creates jobs. Why DON'T you?

By the way, I hope you're planning to keep doing uoa's and posting them. So many people don't continue them and you don't get to see a trend.

Thanks Dennis

Here's my recent one on Penz Plat 5w30. I know it's a somewhat old thread, but same topic.

Looks good and it actually stayed in grade (just barely). Some trending would be helpful since it's rare to see several successive uoa's on Resource Conserving oils. I would at least go with Pennzoil Ultra (if I didn't run a thick oil) as the new SN version has very impressive NOACK volatility numbers and is purportedly made with PAO base stocks.

Are you planning to extend the interval?

If he does extend the interval, would the oil not likely fall down into 20w territory?
Bit of a downer that a jug of synthetic barely lasts 4,000 miles before it starts being barely adequate.

Yep, but some people do follow Blackstone's advice even if there is some fuel dilution. There have been 5W-30 uoa's posted here with oil shearing to a 20 grade in less than 2k miles so staying a 30 grade in 3,750 miles is pretty good, IMO! But no, I wouldn't extend this interval.

Well when I changed the oil I just put in new Penz Plat 5w30. I'm debating letting it run out to 5k, but we'll see. I'd like to do a second sampling after this oil change and see what the cst is. I've seen some other UOAs with the same oil that ended up around 10cst. I was doing some research and most 5w30 weight oils start with cst from anywhere around 9-12cst right out of the bottle. I don't do any racing, hard launching, or bouncing off the rev limiter, so the likelyhood of spinning a bearing daily driving is pretty low. However, I do understand that lack of oil, or film strength is what leads to spun bearings so the potential is there.

Only reason I went with the oil i did is cause it was on sale. If I see the T6 I'll give it a try, but it hasn't been available at either local pepboys or advance auto.

Surprising results on this last sample. 5k miles. Viscosity stayed within range.

Interesting. As EC oils go it seems to be doing pretty well. Two successive decent UOAs. What are your driving conditions? Short trips at all? Any mods?

I'd lowered my opinion of PP after seeing some less than stellar UOAs of the SN version over on BITOG. That combined with the loss of ACEA A5/B5 rating led me to sort of write it off in favor of Ultra (usually very close in price).

Is yours the SN version, or do you have old stock of SM?

I'm pretty gentle with my car. Only have an exhaust, and my tank mpg averages ~25-27mpg with mostly highway driving. As far as I know this is the new SN version that's on the shelves now. I still have the jugs at home and can double check.

I would definitely go with the Ultra if it was available in the 5qt jugs, but I've never seen it in those. i like the jugs cause I can just fill them back up with the used oil to go recycle it. Plus less packaging is always good. I'll see what this next report turns out like. Might not go out the full 7k mi that Blackstone recommended, but somewhere in between 6-7k mi.
