"Project Trinity" VW New high Tech Flagship

While we're still waiting for several of Volkswagen's electric concepts like the ID. Buzz and ID. Vizzion to enter production, the German carmaker has provided a glimpse into the future with a tantalizing teaser of a new flagship electric EV.

Dubbed "Project Trinity," VW CEO Ralf Brandstatter describes the project as "a highly efficient flat seat concept with an iconic design" and an "innovation leader," comparing its significance to 2015's Project Neo, which morphed into the production ID.3 hatchback.

Whereas the ID.3 and ID.4 ride on VW's MEB electric car platform, Project Trinity (the name is derived from trinitas, the Latin word for triad) will be underpinned by a "state-of-the-art flat-panel" platform.

Brandstatter claims this revolutionary architecture will set new standards for range, charging speed, and digitization. VW also confirmed Project Trinity has Level 2+ autonomy driving technology and will be "level 4 ready" when legislation allows it to be used on the road, enabling the car to control steering, acceleration, and braking without any driver input. Project Trinity will also utilize a "radically new production approach."

"Wolfsburg is becoming a flagship for innovative, fully networked production processes. We will demonstrate that you can build innovative electric cars in a highly efficient and economical way not only in Berlin, but also on the shores of the Midland Canal," said Brandstatter.

Shown under a cover in a teaser image, Project Trinity takes the form of a long, low-slung EV with a sleek design incorporating a sloping roofline. It appears to have a hatchback bodystyle evolving from the ID.3. However, it's unclear if Project Trinity will become part of VW's ID. family when it enters production.

Potentially, Project Trinity could inherit some of the technology from the top-secret Project Artemis flagship program that will spawn three new "highly automated" EVs for VW Group's premium Audi, Bentley, and Porsche brands. VW hasn't announced when Project Trinity will enter production, but the first Artemis EV is expected to arrive in 2024.

These big auto companies finally learned that releasing hype/semi vaporware (I'm looking at you, GM) is what boosts their stock price. The old way of keeping everything super secret and then "wowing" everyone when it's about to come to market isn't doing them any favors.

That's true. But I'd also point to the pattern of showing off a concept car that's absolutely gorgeous, and then releasing a toaster with thee same name.
