New Nissan Pathfinder reveal set for February 5

Nissan USA has started the official countdown clock to the global reveal of the fifth-generation Nissan Pathfinder, which was originally due to make its world debut at the Los Angeles motor show in November before it was cancelled.

A new mini-site launched by the Japanese car-maker this week confirms the upgraded 2022 Nissan Frontier – the US version of the 2021 Nissan Navara that arrives here in March – and the 2022 Nissan Pathfinder will be revealed at 1:00pm EST on February 4 (5:00am AEST on February 5).

Neither model is specifically named, but it’s clear from this teaser image that the next-generation Pathfinder will be unveiled online in two weeks.

Expected on sale in the US later this year but not in Australia until early 2022, the all-new US-built seven-seat SUV will again take the fight to the dominant Toyota Kluger, the latest version of which finally arrives Down Under by mid-2021.



First teased last May, the new Pathfinder will be the next in a series of new Nissan models to be launched, starting with the new JUKE last year and also including the new X-TRAIL and QASHQAI, both of which are also unlikely to arrive here before early next year.

Nissan’s new flagship SUV – apart from the hulking Patrol – will take on squarer proportions than the model it replaces, if the teaser image is any guide.

Up front, it should also share its V-Motion grille and headlight design theme with the new Nissan Rogue, as the X-TRAIL is called in the US.

Inside, expect an upgraded interior with a carryover seven-seat layout and an advanced touch-screen infotainment system supported by the latest connectivity options.

As seen in the new X-TRAIL, high-tech features should include a digital instrument cluster, wireless phone charging and a raft of new and upgraded ProPILOT autonomous driver assist systems.

Also likely is a more premium fit and finish to the cabin, with top-spec models including tri-zone climate control, premium leather seats with cooling and heating, a motion-activated power tailgate and improved/modular storage areas throughout the vehicle, including the cargo area.

Unlike the new-look Nissan X-Terra, the large SUV that’s based on the same ladder frame as the Navara but is unlikely to come to Australia, the next Pathfinder will remain a large crossover wagon based on a monocoque platform – in this case an updated version of the current model’s D platform that’s shared with the US-only Nissan Murano, Altima and Maxima.

The current Nissan Pathfinder is offered with a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol-electric powertrain (188kW/330Nm) and a 3.5-litre petrol V6 (202kW/340Nm). Both 2WD and AWD drivelines are available, and pricing spans from $44,240 to $70,140 (plus on-road costs).

The new Nissan Pathfinder is also expected to continue without diesel power, but the naturally-aspirated V6 could score a nine-speed automatic transmission rather than the current model’s continuously variable transmission (CVT).


Alongside it, Nissan may also offer the variable-compression VC-Turbo 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that produces 185kW/370Nm in the Altima and 200kW/380Nm in the Infiniti QX50 and QX55.

A replacement for the Pathfinder Hybrid is also expected, and it could incorporate a non-plug-in ePower petrol-electric hybrid powertrain like the new X-TRAIL.

The hybrid system works more like a range-extending EV, with electric motors propelling the vehicle and a small petrol engine working solely to recharge the battery system, with no connection to the driving wheels.

The Nissan Pathfinder has been a mainstay of the Nissan SUV fleet since 1985 and the existing R52-series model dates back to 2013. It reached an annual sales peak of almost 6500 in 2015, but found just 1118 Australian homes last year.

It will face stiff competition not only from the new Kluger and recently released Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sorento, but the all-new Hyundai Palisade, updated Mazda CX-9 and the fifth-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee, which also remains about a year away from Australian showrooms.

Good to see Nissan trying. CVT's should be limited strictly to compact vehicles on the cheap and it appears Nissan has realized that buyers of more premium vehicles expect real automatic transmissions. Hopefully Subaru realizes this as well as the Ascent is far too expensive to come with a CVT.

A step in the right direction but is it the same 9 speed from the Acura/Honda lineup.....the ZF? If so , that things a piece of junk too.....well there's hope for tehm if they are going to start ditching the CVT's.

I said above. JATCO same manu as their 7AT but 9AT. It's what Subaru used for their in house x-EAT slushboxes.

Got it, thanks. Missed that part. I don’t know anything about this tranny. This is all conjecture at this point. I notice the article says something like “ could be replaced with a 9speed AT”.

Hopefully it’s true .....although I’d really like the see the Zf 8 speed.

2022 Nissan Pathfinder Revealed With New Rugged Design

Its bolder styling is inspired by the original Pathfinder.

Launched in 2013, the current-generation Nissan Pathfinder was a radical departure from its predecessor. Whereas the third-generation model was an off-road capable, rear-wheel-drive SUV, its successor was a sedate four-wheel-drive crossover riding on a unibody platform. Its transformation was mocked, earning it the nickname "Mallfinder." For the new fifth-generation model, the Pathfinder has been redesigned with more rugged styling inspired by the original model. Make no mistake, however: this is still a family crossover rather than a true off-roader. But while the new Pathfinder doesn't return to its off-roading roots, its more aggressive exterior is a massive improvement.

Redesigned from the ground-up, the new Pathfinder has a larger front fascia, a wide stance, and a shorter front overhang, giving it a bolder presence than the outgoing model.

Styling cues from Nissan's current design language also bring the Pathfinder in-line with the automaker's newer models, including a V-motion, three-slot grille as a homage to the original Pathfinder, C-shaped headlights, and a floating roofline. LED headlights and slim upper daytime running lights come as standard. At the rear, the new Pathfinder sports slimmer LED taillights and a "boxed out" liftgate inspired by the first Pathfinder incorporating a prominent satin chrome "Pathfinder" name.

14 exterior colors and color combinations are available, including five new two-tone available for the first time in the Pathfinder's history. A two-tone Scarlet Ember with Super Black Metallic replicates the original Pathfinder's bright red color, while the new Obsidian Green Pear finish is a solid dark green with a hint of pearl.

The 2022 Nissan Pathfinder will come standard with a nine-speed automatic transmission, replacing the previous-generation’s CVT.

The 2022 Nissan Pathfinder is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 that makes 284 hp and 259 lb-ft of torque.

Nissan is including its Nissan Safety Shield 360 as standard equipment for all 2022 Pathfinders. The truck goes on sale this summer.
With almost a decade under its belt, the fourth-generation Nissan Pathfinder is getting a successor. New for ’22, the upcoming Pathfinder gets a complete overhaul and has some serious changes from the last generation. Most notably, Nissan is opting for a traditional automatic transmission instead of the continually variable units in the previous generation. The new Pathfinder also sports a different design direction, making it look more rugged than the outgoing model.

Powering the 2022 Nissan Pathfinder is still a 3.5-liter V6 that makes 284 hp and 259 lb-ft of torque, a carryover engine from the outgoing model. The new automatic transmission is the powertrain’s major change. While previous Pathfinders used the Nissan Xtronic CVT, the ’22 models will use a nine-speed automatic. From there, the power travels through either the front wheels in front-wheel-drive models or an intelligent four-wheel-drive system on all-wheel-drive variants.

Nissan also toughened up Pathfinder’s styling some. The 2022 Pathfinder looks more sophisticated and rugged than the outgoing model. The V-Motion grille looks more aggressive than the previous models and is flanked by standard LED headlights. Nissan also opted for a floating roof, a nice touch that keeps it familiar to its stablemates.

Inside Nissan is doubling down on tech. In front of the driver is an available 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a 10.8-inch head-up display is also available. There’s also an available 9.0-inch infotainment touchscreen if you want to load up your new Pathfinder. As for standard equipment, the dash shrinks to a reasonable 7.0-inches and the standard infotainment screen drops an inch to 8.0-inches. Both infotainment systems run Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for no extra cost. You can opt for wireless CarPlay if you’re prone to losing cables, but that is an extra-cost option. Other optional consumer tech features also include a 13-speaker Bose sound system, NissanConnect with a WiFi hotspot and a wireless charging pad.

Consumer tech might make life more exciting, but safety tech is more important. For 2022, Nissan includes its Nissan Safety Shield 260 suite of safety features. That means you’re getting automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, a blind spot warning system, a rear cross-traffic alert system, high beam assist and rear automatic braking, all standard. There are other features like a traffic sign recognition system and a blind spot intervention system that you can tack on for an extra cost. The Nissan ProPilot Assist driver assistant is also available on the SL- and S-badged Pathfinder SUVs for the first time.

There’s no word on price, but you can expect that closer to the summer 2021 arrival date. We don’t expect a huge price bump over the outgoing model, and wouldn’t be surprised to see the new Pathfinder start right around today’s $33,075 starting price.

There are a lot of people out there that don't know much about vehicles and assume because Nissan is a Japanese brand that it's a really good vehicle. Also believe it or not there are actual Nissan fans out there.

Because there can be a lot of deals on Nissans. While they may be similarly priced on paper, you can save a lot of money on discounts. Sure, resale could be worse too but to people who don't go through cars like toilet paper, it can be a deal.

You are right. They are using the transverse setup which is the ZF 9AT everyone else is using. Bummer was hoping for a longitudinal platform share with Mercedes and the JATCO 9AT.
