2021 Hyundai Sonata N-Line

Hyundai teased the Sonata N-Line last year, and now the model has been fully revealed thanks to a video that was posted online.

While clip was only available for a few minutes, The Korean Car Blog managed to snag some pictures as well as details about the upcoming model.

As you see in these screenshots, the performance-oriented sedan has a modestly revised front bumper with more aggressive air intakes. We can also see a N-Line branded grille, a four-tailpipe exhaust system and sportier wheels which reportedly measure 19-inches.

Interior changes are minor, but will apparently include N-branded sport seats with cloth and leather upholstery. We can also see red contrast stitching and a modestly revised steering wheel that appears to feature an N-Line logo.

The publication says the car has a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 286 hp (213 kW / 290 PS) and 311 lb-ft (421 Nm) of torque. That shouldn't be too surprising as the engine is shared with the Kia K5 GT which has virtually the same output.

The engine will be paired to an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission which sends power to the front wheels. The car is also slated to have an upgraded suspension with revised springs and dampers. The report goes on to say we can expect launch control, a "Sports +" mode and a beefier braking system. The latter will likely carryover from the K5 GT which has discs that measure 13.6 inches (345 mm) front and 12.8 inches (325 mm) rear.

A debut is expected shortly and the car will reportedly be launched in South Korea during the third quarter.

Really cool. Looks like a great alternative to the GLI/Accord Sport and so on. Hyundai/KIA have really stepped up their game lately.

It will be interesting on how the suspension is tuned. Even a FWD can be daily fun if tuned correctly.

check out the KIA K5, outoging optima, they will be releasing an AWD sedan, but 175hp.

The GLI and Elantra GT N-line had independent rear suspension. And a manual transmission, of course.

What's this got? Other than the vile front it doesn't look too bad.

MK7 GLI has an independent suspension in the rear, same exact set-up as the GTI with minor tweaks due to a longer wheelbase (IMO it handles better). Also comes with Golf R brakes and LSD standard. And don't let the "228" HP fool you, it is closer to 260.

I know. The GLI is one of the few cars I'd consider new at the moment unless I want to spend a lot of money. The WRX inventory in Chicago is really thin, anyway.

Great car indeed. They were selling '19 S models for 22 grand if you wanted the 6 speed and 23 grand if you wanted DSG. WRX is a bit harder to get a good discount. Tons more of standard equipment on the GLI too.

It's frikken Kia, just buy the cheapest one and enjoy spending your money elsewhere.

hyundai is confusing the N-line on all their other models just means sporty appearance but on the sonata it actually gets the uplevel engine

Every N-Line gets an upgraded engine. Elantra and Elantra GT get the 1.6L Turbo on the N-Line.

N-Line = Si/WRX/BMW Mxxxi
N = Type-R/STI/BMW Mx

It's just the difference between the hopped up "sporty" version and the hardcore "performance" variant, same as with other manufacturers (although the BMW comparison is becoming a stretch, not for any fault by Hyundai, but just because even the supposedly "sporty" BMW models are becoming outrageously fast).

It's not that much of a stretch - Hyundai hired the previous BMW M chassis tuner as their head chassis tuner. I remember reading about that when the Veloster N was released to all of those 'Best Driver's Car' accolades.

The most powerful Sonata ever should be a decent performance bargain.

We first learned of the 2021 Hyundai Sonata N Line late last year, with the company promising 290 horsepower (216 kilowatts) and 311 pound-feet (422 newton-meters) from the sporty sedan. Now, with just a few weeks left before the N Line arrives in dealers, we know how much it’ll cost: The zippy Sonata will start at $33,200 with all-season tires or $33,400 with summer rubber, plus $995 destination.

That makes the N Line the second–most expensive model in the non-hybrid Sonata lineup, behind only the luxurious, $33,850 Limited. Justifying the price is the most powerful engine ever fitted to a Sonata – a turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-four, backed up by an eight-speed dual-wet-clutch transmission shared with the Veloster N (as well as the Kia K5 GT). The new engine is based on Hyundai’s existing naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four, enhanced with forced induction, revised engine internals, and improved cooling and thermal management.

Unlike the engine, the DCT is an all-new design. The clutches splash around in an oil bath, keeping them cooler and providing improved lubrication relative to a dry-clutch transmission. Hyundai N engineers developed the DCT in-house, giving it eight gears for improved efficiency and performance and tuning it for driving fun. A quicker steering ratio improves cornering response, as do firmer rear springs; thicker front and rear anti-roll bars; N-tuned dampers; and stiffer engine, transmission, and suspension mounts. Larger 13.6-inch front and 12.8-inch rear brakes keep everything under control.

The 2021 Sonata N Line also gets a set of 19-inch alloy wheels, unique front and rear fascias, a rear spoiler, and an N dual exhaust with quad-exit tips. Inside, the front bucket seats have an N-specific design, wrapped in Nappa leather and Dinamica microfiber suede. Further justifying the N Line’s price is a standard panoramic power sunroof, keyless entry and start, LED interior and exterior lighting, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and more.

Honestly, the Sonata N Line seems like something of a bargain, offering tons of feature content and the performance specs we’d expect of an N-branded product. It’s a bit less powerful and more expensive than the Toyota Camry TRD – 301 hp (224 kW) and $32,185 – but it boasts way more torque and more luxury than the somewhat spartan Japanese sedan. It’s hard to fathom why someone might choose the more expensive, 180-hp (134-kW) Sonata Limited too, since the N Line seems to offer most of the luxury and convenience features with far more power.

The 2021 Hyundai Sonata N Line arrives “at most dealerships in November,” according to the company. Between the stellar Sonata Hybrid and this new, sporty model, Hyundai has both ends of the spectrum covered. If the N Line is as fun to drive as its spec chart suggests, it could be a great family sedan for folks with an enthusiastic bent.

Interior looks very Toyota-like so on the bland side. I wish the front end wasn't so wannabe-Audi as it just ends up looking like a poor-man's failed attempt at an Audi. Making it wider just to show you aren't blatantly copying just doesn't work in this case. Otherwise it's not too bad looking as the rear end at least is somewhat distinguishable.
