VF39 n00b!

Turbo was blown, O2 plug came out the side of the DP and showered the transmission. I took the downpipe off and went to feel for shaft play... no shaft! I've never seen one this bad before... poor STi.

Did this turbo come out of a black, '06 STI?

Is the reason due to oil change habits or failed oil supply? That turbo looks sludged up on the inside.

compressor side is still there. the car has a massive boost leak so i think the turbo overspun.

thats what it looked like to me too. thats why i asked.

shafts usually shear because of torque. a turbo shaft is basically a torque-free shaft. I can't imagine how exhaust gas or intake air could exert enough force to shear a turbo shaft in torsion. Even if the turbo was somehow hydro-locked i still dont see it.

If the shaft sheared it would have been from overheating (oil starvation, coolant block, overspun like OP matt said), or from fatigue, which would be repeated cycles of torsion, but the source of that torsion would still be unknown.

Overspun - how much boost were u runnin?

Speculation.

The engine had about one quart of oil in it, but there was a ton in the exhaust. When I took the downpipe off the catback it started dripping out instantly, so it could have been oil starvation as well, or a combination of the two.

lol, your only gonna be able to spin that compressor with hopes and dreams.

Thats real bad! My VF22 is pretty shot, yet looks fine.
The turbo seals are busted.

If it was a lot of boost, then it wouldn't have overspun. A turbo will spin faster if it doesn't have to push the air into the motor.

since it seemed to have a massive boost leak, i assume the turbo was just going full tilt trying to make target boost.

and yeah, it did, but then the owner of that car bought a 4wd civic and is swapping the built motor and turbokit over to that

What setup does it use for the rear driveline and transfercase? Something from like a CR-V or similar? Or is it completely custom?

::sorry to thread jack::
