Default What speakers should I get to replace the factory ones?

I want to replace the factory speakers but keep the factory head unit. What do you all recommend? I like the MB quarts and the Focal speakers, and people have been telling me to get those. I looked and I can get separate tweeters from MB quart to putin factory location....

please help me out....hehe thanks!!

so do you have the separate crossover box too?

also are u using a separate amp or off the head unit?

My goal would be to keep the stock head, and just replace all the speakers with better ones.....anyone know how the factory sound system is wired? I actually know a lot of about car stereos because I have built competition cars before, but not enough about the wrx....Thanks!

I am a big fan of Diamond Audio. I have components in the front of my Audi and co-ax in the rear panels. To me, Boston's are too bright - but certainly a great speaker (big w/ the Audi crew). I have both a Nakamichi deck and amp as well if that helps at all.

ScreaminFast,

I'm in the same boat right now. I'd like to keep the factory head unit, and upgrade the speakers. I appreciate reading the replies so far, and look forward to reading about more experiences and recommendations in this thread. Thanks for posting the question.

Hi,

I just upgraded my system and keep the same unit.

I upgraded Front Spks "AVI Canada made" $400 cnd this will blow the MB away.

Upgraded JL Amp 300/4 bridged 2 channel to drive the sub.

one 12" to replace that on the passager seats.

and all i can say, is a much better system overall.

I have my stock system pshing the back speaker still. but i never notice that at all anymore.

looking for to upgrade the HD to pionner 8200 double face DIN unit.

and add another Class D amp just for the sub. looking at either JL again or MTX.

Just my 2cents.
Thanks,
Adrian

eclipse componets are always a good choice if you're willing to shell ou the big bucks. And by the speakers you have listed you are LOL!! i too like focals never liked mbs and havn't heard many bostons. Orion does make nice componets aswell bu they are hard to come buy as they are limited quanities.

I haven't gone too far yet..

I've got a Pioneer DEH7400MP (MP3 with full LCD display & 4 x 50w MOSFET).. That's running to a set of Clarion SRS1684 200w 6 1/2 + 3/4 Separates. Then I have the deck using the lowpass subwoofer output to the rear stock 4" speakers. It's got punch, you can almost feel the bass, and I have 2 x Earthquake 8" PRO Subs that I am conidering tossing in the trunk..

The door speakers are a quandry.. Only retail speakers that will fit your doors without mods are Rockford Fosgate.. Any other speaker will be too big (the magnet will rub the power window) and the screw holes will not match the crazy Subaru pattern. Though a shorter speaker will also usually have less sound quality. I had to make up a 3/4" spacer based on the factory speaker to make my Clarion's fit, and then I had to put the grills on them because the cones were tapping the door panels!

Good luck!

PS: I'm planning to do a nice install guide including fastener points and tips on how to avoid breaking anything. Let me know if there's interest.

I am running Boston Rally Components RC620 6 1/2" in the front with a 3/4" spacer. Unfortunately I am running them off my Alpine 7893 at the moment until I get my JL 300/2 amp for them on sat. They definitely sound a lot better than the factory with the 27 watts RMS from the alpine but are in desperate need of an amp. They distort at too high of a volume because of lack of power. So until i get the amp I dont turn them up as loud as I would like too. and the crossovers mount nicely on the door with no interference from the door panel. I personally like them becase they have extremely sharp highs though as said earlier they are very brite but thats the way I like my music.

Oh yeah.. The crossovers fit right into the door panel right above a white block of styrofoam.. I just applied some double-sided sticky tape liberally to both the door and the crossover. After I was finished I could carry the door panel around by the crossover.

hey guys im new to the board but not to car audio, i have been installing since 1994. when choosing a speaker you have to decide if you are going to ad an amp. i have installed almost every speaker out, from diamond, focal, bostons,mb quart,polk,infinity,ect.... almost any speaker on the market will sound great with the right system...if you decide to get thehigher end speakers and run them of your factory its a waste of time and money they will sound like garbage, the factory radio does not have enough power to drive the higher end speakers and the 18 to 20 guage factory wire will not to the job either...so if you want great sound get an amp, 14 to 12 guage wire from the amp to the speakers, and a nice set of speakers..when you go to werever you get your speakers just listen to them on ther displays and then you decide ......

but any 100$ pair of coaxials will sound better than factory paper..

i personlay like focals, polk momos, and infinity kappa perfects..i have had everyone of these but they will not just drop in do to the depth of the speaker.......

If that was directed to me just so you know running the rallys was not my plan. However the company I am getting the amp from didnt have the amp in stock on sat. when I purchased the components. I am not a patient person aither if i want something i want it so instead of looking at the speakers in the box for a week I installed them and ran them off the head unit for now which is an acceptable amount of power to run the seeing that they need anywhere from 20 - 275 watts. The alpine puts down 27watts RMS so I made the decision the run them off of that until this sat. when the amp comes in. I have been working with stereo stuff for about as long as you and I have always done an awesome job. I am a perfectionist to say the least. I also think this sat. when I pick up the amp I am going to ditch the Boston crossovers for an audio control to get a better sound quality and imaging. I need to also pick up a cap. Oh I can see the money just dissapearing and here I was all set to drop my money on performance and somehow got back into the world of audio. Oh well after I finalize this I will spend my money on performance or getting my head examined after I go over how much money I have spent on this car and 5 previous cars. Seems like i do this and then get rid of the damn thing.

OK i am done babbling.

Yes there's no point using a high power amp with factory wiring, you'll lose atleast 3 db! (Perfectionists beware!)

I wanted to put in an old Orion Cobalt 230 to power the front speakers but no less than 3 stereo 'experts' told me that the 50watt MOSFET amp in my head would work just a well, if not better than the 30watt Cobalt.. I always thought that built-in amps were crap regardless of MOSFET or not. Apparently times change!

So now the Cobalt is going to be bridged and run the subs.. Whee!

hey chris

the post i posted was to help the guy try to get a better picture, so he can pick the speakers that would satisfy him..even in your own post you said you were going to amp them or bi-amp w/an audio control x-over... so i wasnt picking on you..your setup should sound really good just dont use the stock wires for the speakers ..... by the way hows Kevin is helping you w/ the system i seen your car on the road a couple of weeks ago looking very good you should post some pics of it so other folks can admire it .......

looks like i will see alot of you on the boards now. if you catch my drift .....

I just fab'ed some adapters/spacers to put my Infinity Reference 6.5's from my Honda in the front doors - wasn't too hard, although I'll have to go back to make a rain shield soon. With a 1/2 spacer, the speakers fit great.

Since I can't use my second set of 6.5's in the back, I guess I'm going to have to get some 4's for the rear doors.

I ordered an adapter harness so I don't need to cut the factory radio harness & will be installing my JVC HU, 400w Coustic amp & 2 10" Coustic dual voice coil subs. After reading about the Legacy DIN's, I guess I should try to get my hands on one of those too.

The whole setup sounded great in my old Honda, so I'm expecting even better sound in my much quieter Subie

On a side note - I still have material left to make adapters for the front door speakers. If anyone is interested in some, PM me. I'm making them out of 1/2" oak faced plywood. Charging $25 shipped... I'll get back to anyone interested early/middle of next week....

Hmm, I wasn't quite ready to put an amp in.....i know speakers definitely sound better with an amp, but I went through two other cars with complete competition systems in them, and one of them the entire thing got stolen......so i dunno what i want to do?

Will they really sound like crap, or just not as good?

spoolin-b ( is that you benji? )

Kevin is kewl I have actually been getting the stuff from him well at least I have gotten the Bostons from him and sat. hopefully I will pick up the JL amp some wires a cap and maybe another set of speakers but I am not sure yet. I dont talk to him as much as before but everyonce and awhile he will come around, he is kinda hard to get in touch with sometimes. I just finished building a custom enclosure out of mdf in the spare tire well running 1 Rockford punch HX2 dual voicecoil sub off a memphis 500d bridged to 2 ohms sounds better than the 2 10" polk dx's I had running off the same amp. Thanks for the compliments on the car. If this is you benji are you driving a WRX now or do you still have the Protege' 5. Hit me up sometime.

I installed Infinity Reference speakers all around in my WRX wagon, 6.5" in front with homemade adapter, and 4" in rear. They are running off the stock head unit on the factory wiring. I bought a 4 channel amp, but haven't installed it yet, and am not sure if I am going to.

The sound is definitely cleaner than before, and sounds better louder, but the Infinity's actually seem to lack some of the bass and warmth of my crappy stock paper speakers.

Overall, I am happy with the upgrade. Rather than install the amp, I am considering selling it and putting the money toward an OEM sub (or a Kenwood WOOX or the JVC sub) to fill out the sound.

Some aftermarket speakers may not sound as good with the stock HU as they would with a higher-output unit or amp, because they are designed to be driven by higher power and aren't that efficient. If you're planning to keep the stock HU for a while but replace the speakers, it's a good idea to check the efficiency rating and power requirement of any new speakers you may be contemplating.

ScreaminFast,

I have the Cusco rear strut tower bar (carbon fiber) and Cusco rear triangulation bar (V-brace add-on) in my WRX, and yes it is a very nice suspension improvement. Well worth the "hassle" in terms of having to figure something else out regarding how to approach the subwoofer element. Tood bad we can't do "bucket seats" in the back and have a subwoofer enclosure in-between the two seats back there!
