Hello this is my first post on the board but I have been poking around on it for quite some time. I still have yet to find what the upsides of owning a 99 2.5rs are. I have heard that they have beefier con rods then others years and that the MAF will be more happy to take aftermarket boost then a MAP car, but anything anyone has to say of why my car is differnt from the following years would be greatly appreciated
My car is at 48k miles and has no signs of wear on any of the driveline and is complelty bone stock but I soon want it to keep up with a usdm rex or at least off the line to 40 mph with bigger displacement just not huffing as much o2 so that high compression displacement doesnt find its way into the form of sharpnel in my bottom end, I realy want a reliable way to add FI with about 6 psi and having a stock bottom end and knowledge about clutch and tranny troubles at this power level would be apreciated as well!!! And with cold weather would piggyback engine management be a terrible idea not sure on how it would do with the molecules outside not moving so fast, then having warm weather in the summer? also heard about cobb making the access ecu for the 2.5 and not sure if that would be worth the wait for complete engine mgnt. to help reduce too many black boxs under the hood working with miracles

Love my 99 RS-T, easy turbo job. Lack of rear LSD sucks though...

I believe the '99 was the first year with the (generally preferred) SOHC heads, while still retaining the lower 9.7:1 compression ratio of the earlier years. In addition, I think '99 was the first year to see the phase 2 blocks (in some of the engines), which I believe are somewhat beefier/quieter. Plus, the intake manifold is supposed to be the only one that WRX injectors will fit directly into. From this, I always understood that the '99 was the "best" of the 2.5RS's to turbocharge, assuming you could find a way around the fragile MAF (like converting to a stand-alone engine management setup.)

If I'm wrong on this, please speak up folks.

a 99 RS would be the smart choice of the 99-02's except you lose the rear LSD.

Thing is you can turbo a 99 w/ a S-AFC and whatever size injectors you'd like.

The MAF does not require a clamp like the MAP if you run your stock ECU. WRX or STi injectors fit the manifold perfictly. 9.7:1 CR. All these give the 99 RS an advantage over the later years.

and the fact that 99 runs more reserved timing on lower compression then the 00-02 is a big plus

Don't forget, the MY99 2.5RS has a rich history of blown MAFs with aftermarket turbo kits that retain the MAF (e.g. S-AFC setups). The MY99 2.5L SOHC MAF is not plug-compatible with the MY98 2.5L DOHC MAF.
