Well my sister got a $1200 mountain bike, a while ago. Its a Giant VT Two...not sure if its a good bike or not, but compared to what ive ridden it is! Anyways these things are so damn fun! It feels like your on air. I really need to get in shape for Fire Fighting so maybe I will start riding it around and all that good stuff. Yea just thought I would share...

Well good to know they are good bikes. I didnt want to say she has the most Awesomeo mountain bike. Because I was expecting to hear..

" Oh my god she bought one of those! They are OK, I personally hate them. The Mach 4 version 5.3 is far times better but for downhill I would take the 2.3 version "

or something..

yea....

The VT's are cool. They have a variable travel built into them and the shock is highly adjustable - you can adjust the damping ramp-up rate and you have seperate rebound damping adjustment.

The VTs were usually my choice for tooling around on when I worked at a shop in Raleigh.

Weighing 150 lb is an advantage, not a disavantage. Also It's not all leg strength, its endurance. Just use your low gears and pedel fast. 100 rpm cadance is what your shooting for.

I had a Giant for my first "real" (read: non Huffy) mountain bike. Great bike, but the frame was a bit too big (I'm 6'2, the frame was a 23 incher) for anything other than trail riding. I got rid of that and got a GT Zaskar back when the only difference between them and the Zaskar LE was the XT vs XTR component group. I've had the bike since 96 and it's still just as great as the day i bought it...The 18 inch frame was a huge improvement, and the weight savings and agility improvements were substantial. Keep riding, it only gets better

Holy....an RTS? The first dual suspension rig from GT? What kind of shape is it in? If it's half decent I'd be really interested in it...PM me if you'd be interested in a sale

Sir, your priorities are way out of whack. When I assembled mine, I put the money into the bike instead of the computer. You know, so I could commune with nature and ish. Actually, it is a far better investment in "you" than any piece of plastic with a keyboard and a screen. There is nothing, nothing like feeling the burn on a hard mountain climb and that sense of accomplishment when you successfully complete a really hard ride.

Semabe, i completely agree, but all my "me" time this summer is gonna be spent on my TL1000S (sportbike) and my jet-ski. So i'll be out there playing, but between work and those 2 toys, there won't be much time left for mtn biking. Plus i don't really have anybody to ride with on that.

blackfeet, what, is it like a collectors item now? I'll take a pic.

Ah, I see what you mean. My girlfriend rides too, so I have a permanent riding partner. Yeah, that bike is kind of an collectors item. Very cool.

I might be getting a Specialized Epic this weekend...hello $2000 (or rather goodbye? ). Now for that price I could have Rallispec in NJ finish off a turbo instalation in a sweet 94 L thats for sale from a very nice board member in tri-state. Its just funny to think about that...BIKE PLEASE!

My hardtail is awesome (Gary Fisher Kaitai - NEVER EVER has let me down) but I want the benefits of some full suspension XC action. I might make the Fisher into a single speed and slap a riser bar on it...yes....

Im back in action this summer after being out 98% of last season due to a broken scalpula (from mtn. biking of course!)

So I'm starting to shop for a new mountain bike in the $800-$1100 range. Anyone have recomendations on specific models that fit in this range.

Full suspension

I don't miss my hardtail. Or actually my back doesn't. One run down a rock strewn fire road and you will never look back. I was out of work for a while due to a crash.....fractured pelvis, road rash, sprained knee, sprained shoulder...ugly. I broke my collarbone last year when I couldn't get out of my new eggbeater pedals (the cleat twisted in my shoe.) I ride a bit more conservatively now.

I suggest you find out what brands your local bike shops sell, then go to the MFRs website and see which one fit you best (budget, type of riding, ect). Once you think you have it narrowed down, go to http://www.mtbr.com and check out the reviews on your choices. Then get into the shop to make sure it fits and feels fine!

Fisher Wahoo with a new fork, crank and brakes. Manitou fork, Race Face crank and fittings, and whatever disc brakes your wallet allows (I like the magura mechanicals..but I run an Shimano xt/xtr v brake setup for light weight.) Also, consider trading up the drivetrain to a shimano XT setup...that should put you at about 900-$1000.

I've visited two local shops that I'm comfortable doing business with. One is pushing more towards an off the shelf setup and the other seems more into putting together a custom setup much like Semabe is suggesting. It seems I can get a "better" bike that I can add money too and improve with the latter setup. I'm just not sure this is the path I want to take. At the same time some of the bikes in this range look like pretty decent setups.

Nope, stamina. How many muscle heads do you see in pro Mtn biking, road cycling, or even triathlons? Yeah they are cut, but most racers don't weigh more than 150.

As far as the "my bike is better than your bike" thing...they're all pretty much the same. You're paying for advertising and a pretty color scheme and that's it.

Mtn bike racing has far less to do with the equipment, and almost everything to do with the person on it.

You don't need to spend $1000, or even $700 for a quality bike that you can ride into the ground. Full-suspension is also something i despise. But i can despise it cuz i've never been into downhilling.
If you're going to have full suspension, or disc brakes, you might as well add an engine, and some doors, maybe a windshield etc.

I'm just a fan of the old RTS and LTS series bikes...I think GT really started losing their touch in the later part of the 90's...Take pics of both, I love the older GT bikes...As for the specs on mine...1995 GT Zaskar frame (double butted 6061 T6 Al, shot peened and ball burnished, hand welded in US and anodized Ink Blue) with full XT group, Chris King NoThreadSet, Manitou FS Ti fork, Mavic 217 rims (gold anodized) XTR shifters and V brakes, Bontranger Ti handle bars, Specialized Ground Control tires, DT Swiss spokes and a Synchros stem...I just can't bring myself to get rid of it, it's the perfect bike for me.
