![]() I think this problem they will fix even if you are out of warranty, as long as the involved parts are still stock, because it was a recall type of issue, a known flaw across the entire 02/03 WRX line, rather than a part that might brake but usually doesn't. SoA actually got involved in this, so call them if the dealership gives you crap about it.
This is caused by fuel lines to the engine that become loose in the cold. If that isn't the problem, I have no idea how to help you. ![]() Good luck. |

![]() I had this fuel smell issue on my 02 when I lived in Buffalo NY. I have never heard of the problem in temps over ~20deg F. If you are smelling it in SoCal temps then you likely have a much more serious issue than I've ever heard of related to the TSB issue.
Did you replace your fuel pump and not get a good seal between the cover and tank? Step in a bit of fuel at the filling station? overfill? Lots of reasons for fuel smell. Too many to cover online... |

SoCal includes desert regions that dip below 20F regularly. Just ask the Lancaster folks! |

![]() I'm getting it right now. I just moved up to about 3200ft so it snowed this past weekend and sub 32 degree temps at night. My car's never been in temps this cold till now. Smelly, smelly, smelly. Need to call the dealer and see if they are willing to do anything about it, i.e. I have STi V8 short block and V7 red intake manifold, DP, but all the hoses, fuel lines are all stock.

![]() Even if it isn't covered under the warranty or recall thingie (which it really ought to be since we're talking about a factory-original fuel leak, which is potentially extremely dangerous) it should be pretty cheap to get fixed, because from what I read in the other threads on this issue it's just a couple of clamps they need to tighten down enough that they won't come loose anymore with temperature changes.

![]() steve - its not the clamps, I believe the hose is too short (new one is 30mm loner than old one). There are two parts (the hose prt# 807707140 and a pipe prt. # 17544AA134) that need to be replaced by the dealer and supposedly necessitates a full intake manifold removal. I'll just order up the parts and do it myself some weekend. Can't be bothered to take it to the dealer. so that means Festiva in the morning, Wagon in the afternoon till it warms up.

![]() Arnie is correct, this is what happened to my ride, they needed to replace a hose and a small pipe, and it does involve taking the intake manifold apart, since they're doing that, gonna go ahead and replace the turbo inlet hose also with a perrin unit, i knew i smelled something, it will cost around the $600 mark for labor and parts, mainly labor.
