you keep your original tank, but you to make the swap plug and play all around you have to change ALL the wiring on the car, including the fuel tank wiring harness.

i got it now so i can keep my wrx stuff it just has to be wired with all the STi stuff...
awesome thanks! just thinking are there any modifications i could do to the engine while i have it out and before i drop it into my bugeye? |

***** big one just hit me i run a 4spd auto would that conversion be more difficult to pull off or would it be alright since i'm buying the STi as a wreck?

I've searched around and can't seem to find a solid answer. I have a longblock from a 2005 Sti. I have a 2002 Wrx I am going to put it into. I want to do this for about a year till I can save to buy a complete wreck I just wanna car for the winter. So I understand it will be full advanced but do I need the cam posistion sensor. Or can I drill and tap the block to relocated? Also if I do need it will the cosworth work being the gruppe-s outta stock. Any input would be great cause I wanna get my car back together

I kept my WRX tank/rear harness and it all works fine for me, you just won't be able to use the I/C sprayer. My fuel pump pumps fuel just fine, all the lights work on the rear end, but then again, I do have an early 02 (mfr date of 05/01), so I might just have a proper harness missing a few wire inputs....I'll have to look into that!

All of the wiring for the tranny is a part of the bulk engine/02 sensor harness from what I saw on my 05 swap. You will find everything you need if you buy a complete wreck, i.e.: you will be able to convert to 6MT no prob. Hell, you'll even have a spare propshaft since the STi's use the E4AT propshaft.
I never touched much from the dash back harness-wise, but I get fuel and all my taillights/rear doors work just fine. I think the harness was different after the first few WRX's, from what I've heard. |

Agency Power pulley, Perrin intake pipe (it was a b!t@h), new plugs, hollowed out the rear cat, new Grp. N motor/tranny mounts and kartboy tranny x-member bushings, gruppe-s poly shifter bushing, kartboy rear shifter bushing, rear outrigger bushings, RCE yellows, and whiteline steering rack bushings for the WRX rack (reused it). That's just a short list of my mods so far. When I finish up (as soon as I get my ECU back from Tactrix), I will post a final, complete mod list. I'm about $11k into this INCLUDING the puchase of the wrecked STi.

I forgot, but I also carried over the CBE I was running on the WRX set-up. A friend of mine in NC (where I'm getting ready to go to) adjusted the map for the mods I have currently and dyno'd it to 300whp/315lb-ft @ 18.5# peak boost. It will be officially dyno'd as soon as I get there....

sweet! this is some awesome info! not sure on my manf. date but im an 02... hope its the same.... so how hard was the dash harness and the DBW stuff???? Ive got the dash harness , motor harness, and the dbw stuff.... what am i looking at ? haha

Removal of your ENTIRE dash (HVAC, fan box, dashboard, glovebox, etc), you can either remove just the fenderwell liners or those and the fenders (was easiest for us, gives you more access for inlaying the harnesses). Make sure you DO NOT REMOVE anything from the STi's dash harness (fuse panel, immobilizer, ANYTHING!!). Everything bolted right in, no issues (with the exception of ones I made/did). It shouldn't take much more than a few hours.
Make sure you separate the rear diff temp sensor harness and strip it from the rear harness, you can route the wiring to work, just haven't gotten that far yet. The other option is to take care stripping every inch of rear harness and marking/remembering where it goes, swapping fuel tanks (bunch of extra misc crap on the STi tank/rear harness). I figured I'd swap in the STi main fuel pump sending unit (plugs right in, w/ walbro attached, can delete the WRX fuel filter in engine bay due to inline one on STi sending unit), and do the above rather than unbolt the WRX tank and associated mess to get the STi stuff in. It's all about personal preference. If you don't want to go through the hassle of merging the manual and auto HVAC harnesses (like I currently am), make sure you have all of the STi's auto HVAC pieces/center dash/console. |

I'm using an 04 Sti ecu and whatnot so no immobolizer.... But I don't have the rear harness... Do I really need it? I'm getting confused now...

I just took the STi fuel sending unit, put my Walbro into it and installed it in, it bolts/plugs into the WRX fuel tank/harness. I took the rear diff temp sensor sending harness and pulled it out of the STi rear harness and am in the process of running the wires for that, but I haven't had the chance to check the plug to see if the provisions aren't already there for it.
I'm unsure if the 04 STi setup will need to utilize the rear harness, but I know the 05 didn't with mine. Also, your manufacture date should be stamped on the drivers' door frame info label BTW. Still don't remove any of the little control boxes, as bad juju will beset you and your car will set ablaze to itself and be done..... If you have evrything off the wreck and it works, reuse it, it will make your swap and life a hell of a lot easier. |

I broke the black surround piece for the HVAC/radio, so I decided to stay with the WRX center dash/console and manual HVAC. Ifinished half of the HVAC harness merging in 2 hrs today, working on more wire mapping right now (10pm my time). Plus, I like being able to manually control my HVAC. If the STi's center console/dash and Auto HVAC are intact, you'll just have to swap in the STi's evap/heater core (direct bolt-in), which works, because you have to pull the WRX's to inlay the bulkhead (dash) harness. If you have something that is broken, I still have the entire center dash/console sitting around, LMK.

Ok so what I am reading here is that the rear harness's from the STI and an RS/WRX are the same ? Cept for the rear diff temp sensor wiring ? If this is the case, to save myself the hassel of pulling out the whole rear harness just to install the STI one, where does the rear harness section un-plug from the front
? OR does it ? (hope that made sense) --Also...my car does NOT have a return fuel line (go figure why the crap not), but for that I can simply get the STI fuel tank unit (sending unit/fuel pump mount...etc) , bolt it into my tank and run a return line from the engine compartment correct ???? |

harnesses arent the same at all, its all got to get swapped over.
and i have no idea about the return line, never heard of that. what kind of car do you have? and 02rexboy... i would have just got a new surround! you can use the auto hvac manually, it just has an auto setting in addition to that. little late now though, and of course either way works if you dont mind all the wiring involved. |

did you have to cut or shape anything for the swap... i;ve been researching and it seems that you only have to on RS/WRX conversions. as for the cross members and things should i convert over the STi or can i leave the WRX also what pieces of the suspension from the STi should i swap over?

yeah you need to drop the gas tank and swap the gas tank harness... its a pain in the ass but as far as avoiding any custom wiring its the only way to go to keep things plug and play.
you'll also find an extra sensor on the sti harness which i think just sits on the tank. my friend did that part of the install and i know it hung him up a little, and i'm not sure what the conclusion is there but maybe someone has done it here and can advise. subframes are the same... suspension components are all interchangeable as well i believe (except for wagon). the sti has aluminum front control arms and aluminum rear lateral links... probably not going to notice a huge difference from them but i did the whole thing just for the hell of it. the hubs and bolt pattern are obviously different if you're doing an 05+ so you'll need new suspension and wheels made for 05+ sti. |
