Too bad Ford and Mazda are no longer corporate cousins. We might have had a V6 ecoboost with a manual transmission.

didn't read thread, but I call bull****. Every year, the diesel is just 2 years away, no matter which manufacturer.

OK, now Mazda is confirming the diesel again, but not saying when. Apparently, the 2014 model arrives in showrooms in January 2013 with the gas powerplant.

http://www.autoblog.com/2012/11/29/m...2-5l-for-cx-5/

if they combined a diesel with a 6 speed manual, I might be interested.

Dear Mazda,

If you put a 6-speed in one of these diesels, I will buy one.

Diesel 6MT sedan in second half of 2013 is what I understood. I'd expect 170hp/280tq, ~30/40 city/hwy for around $30k. My wife is getting it in an automatic. The 6-speed will only be available super-base model anyhow, I'm sure.

Can we just drop this motor with a 6-speed manual (and an LSD) into a Mazda 3?

Shame that diesel is $.90/gallon more expensive than regular now. With everyone and their mom getting 35mpg with 180hp 4cyls and 6ATs, the high fuel cost eats up almost all efficiency savings.

What's up with that? I saw that huge discrepancy in the South this past week (VA, NC, SC). The gap is not as wide in the Mid-Atlantic states (NJ, PA, DE) where I'd expect more diesel is diverted for heating oil during the winter months.

The TDI's OBC is a couple MPG's generous on fuel economy reading. Still, a good fuel sipper.

I'm a little worried about the price gap growing. It's as much as $0.50 for me in PA. The biggest I've ever seen was $1 back in 2007, $4/gal for reg, $5/gal for diesel.

Even if I start breaking even, my 140hp 240ft-lb beats the tar out of the "eco" gassers. It's more fun than it has any right to be. The bigger 4-cyls never touch my mileage unless you legit hypermile and the little 4-cyls are severe dogs. They're all insufferable. I've driven them all, too many rental cars. I have nightmares of these soulless, bland Americars sawing away at my sanity as they aimlessly hunt for gears in a never-ending waltz of slushy groaning and point A to B.. transit. Sorry, had to get that off my chest. Fwiw the ~120hp diesels in Europe are dogs too and not so fun.

Yea, it got me about 3 times now. Like, it IS coming!? Oh yea, no. Mazda is taking orders on the gas 6, I figure in a few months they'll be taking them on the diesel, and I've given my old lady the green light on it. She's pumped. But they better not announce the wagon for the next MY after we take delivery of a sedan. I'll go into a coma.

Seriously. I don't even want or need a small suv, but Mazda's driving dynamics paired with diesel efficiency and torquez would be a hard combination to resist. Dat 2.2l...hrrrngh...

Default Still waiting...

Quote:
If you've been waiting for a Mazda 6 diesel, prepare to wait a bit longer. After delaying the US launch until Spring 2014, Mazda now says it won't meet that target date either.

Mazda says the engine meets current emissions standards using only a particulate filter, but the resulting blend of performance and fuel economy isn't up to snuff. Company spokesperson Jeremy Barnes put it simply: "We can meet the emissions standards today, but not with the kind of performance worthy of a Mazda badge." Mazda is reportedly working on a solution, exploring all options including exhaust after treatment as it seeks the proper economy/entertainment blend.

Barnes says Mazda remains committed to bringing a diesel 6 sedan to market, but at this time the company isn't willing to commit to a firm arrival date.

Meh. With the cost of diesel these days and the performance/economy blend of the Skyactive-G engines, I've lost interest. Methinks modern diesels are just a bit too complicated and expensive to be a good alternative to a direct-injected gasoline engine.

With a heavy heart, I am inclined to agree.

I would happily pay a couple grand more for the oil burner. Have you driven the Skyactive-G cars? Gutless down low; the polar opposite of a diesel.

I think you're in a diminishing pool, without economy benefits not that many people will be interested in a diesel. I haven't driven a 2.0l Skyactive, a friend of mine has a 2.5l CX-5, it seems pretty zippy. I presume the 2.0l cars are pretty similar to a Focus, which I have driven, it has pretty good power band as far as I'm concerned. Not the low end of a current VW Tdi, but it winds out, and a lot better than the economy cars of old.

I honestly hope they bring it and it's a success, it'd be great for a CX-5 owner who wants to do some light towing, I'm just not on the bandwagon any more.

The 6 definitely felt that way. Between that and the Mazda dealers in my area refusing to come down more than $500 off MSRP, it put the 6 off my short list.

Meh, I'm sure it'll be a boring drive. It'll handle good but be slow as molasses....just like all their other models these days. Their sole focus these days is fuel economy .

Test drove the 6 and while a nice looking car with a half decent interior it was sssslloooowwwww

If there's one thing most of the manufacturers are good at, its promising a diesel 1-2 years out, and never delivering. I'm truly amazed that Chevy managed to get one in the Cruze (even though its built in Germany )

I guess the most current promise that hasn't come to fail-ition yet is the Nissan Titan Cummins Diesel. Sounds great, but will it happen? It seems more likely than their last attempt with the Maxima that failed in '09, but I'm not holding my breath

Maxima diesel failure info (postponed? )
