Question Second kid on the way, can my 06 STI cut it?

So, the wife is pregnant with our second child and due in October.

We currently have a 2007 GMC Acadia which I actually really like and will keep for a long time. It's big enough for all of our family needs.

I use my car mainly to drive to work and back, and pick up our 19 month old daughter from time to time. So we are not packing up the family for road trips in my car.

However, that being said, I’m not sure my 06 STI is going to cut it anymore with two kids…

I can get away with one car seat, but I'm not sure about two.

I know it can work if I really want it to, but I'm just thinking about other options at the moment.

Does the 08+ STI hatch have enough room for two car seats? Obviously the hatch is a bit more practical than the sedan... but how much more?

I could look into something like a Legacy GT wagon, but I really want to stay in the STI family....

Thoughts?

Congrats!!

Jay, just come by my place one night, and we can strap your child seat next to my rear facing seat and see how they fit.

I believe the STI is rated to carry up to 700lbs

More than ample for 2 adults and 2 children, even if you decide to get really fat.

Thanks buddy, I appreciate that!

I haven't even sat in an 08+ so I don't even know how much bigger they are??

Trust me on this...

You need a two seater so that, when they can both talk, only one can be in the car at any one time.

Congrats. Jim (FIDS) has two kids and he told me it took a little work, but he was able to fit both seats in. He drives an 04.

I know an STI isn't the most practical car to have, however, I'm looking for something that's a bit more practical than my 06....

The WRX 265 might be an option as the bank account is a little low and might not support the STI price...

But I guess that would depend on how much I could sell my car for....

I have fitted two forward facing child seats in the back seat of my hatch before, so it is possible, though some of the tether anchors are right below the hatch opening... so if you need to use those, it does cut into the rear storage space a bit.

I have an '08 STI and my wife drives an '09 Legacy wagon. We only have 1 child but we do have to pack another toddler around now and then.

'08 STI will work fine, ample cargo space for strollers, kid seats etc but the Legacy has even more room. If you go on a road trip I would recommend a cargo box for the top(thule) to hold extra luggage and golf clubs. STI still has the fun factor about it but it is on a very similar platform as the Legacy.

I would stick with the STI.

I don't see why not. The '06 STI is based off of the Impreza which is a sedan to begin with. It does have 2 latch system which means you are set. Now if you mean the noise from the exhaust and the hard suspension, well that's up to you.
I think the brup brup brup noise helps the baby sleeps.

Umm need a correction here, I cruise around with 3 kids in my back seat. You just have to get the right width seats. I've got 2 full size (3 positions seats) in the back with a child carrier in the middle. Totally do-able and makes me laugh even more when I role up to a light, get some unwanted attention, then put down my back windows and show off my 3 waving kids. Oh then take off like a bat out of hell as the light goes green.

i have a 09 sti hatch and had a 07 sti sedan. I moved with my 09 hatch and fit all kinds of things in that massive trunk especially with the seats down. I was never the type to buy based on trunk space but i fit a 50 inch tv and a small fridge in there easily. Costco/ikea/home depot trips are easy i cant believe i just typed that!

You will love the sti hatch.

I don't get why a 4 door STI isn't right for kids?

people buy 4 door civics for kids but an STI (bigger) isn't good enough.

your 06 is plenty fine for 2 kids, only issue would be having to move the seat forward to accomodate the second car seat.

but you could just strap that one in on the driver side and you'll know what it's like. 2 car seats in a 4 door 5 seat sedan is what the norm was 10 years ago. Most are too accustom to uber huge ****ty-van's or monster soccer mom suvs.

/rant

PS, ive had my kids car seat in my 10 STI and 09 FXT and it's fine. Trust me until you hit 3 kids the STI is perfect. ( I don't have 3 but I know you can't fit three across in car seats )

I stuffed my son in the back seat of a VW Corrado for the first five years of his life. Eventually went to an Audi Avant, but he fit ok and it didn't kill him or stunt his growth. That being said, my 08 STI is much roomier and versitile than my 05 STi was. Prices on the GR have not held up so well, you may be able to find an 08 for a decent price.

GR/GH have more room in back, so you should be able to put the fronts back a little farther.

I'm drawing at straws here people!

One reason is that it's an excuse to get into an 08

While I love my 06, I feel like I need a change. A bit nicer ride andnicer interior would help as well... if I can increase the utility at the same time... why not?

This isn't really a need at the moment, but more of a want!

Jay

In California they'd throw you in jail for child abuse.

If you're looking for a reason to get yourself into a GR then give it a few more months to either

A) get into a 2011

OR

B) get a deal on a 2010 their trying to get rid of.

but ya sorry 08+ are all the same (minor tweaks between years)
