1998 2.5 GT Wagon Question
I just bought a 2.5 GT Wagon and I love the car but have some questions. I have the phase 1 eng. Is the phase 1 solid? Is it capable of abuse ? ? The reason I ask is they seem to have alot of "issues" is there anything I should look out for?. I guess I would just like some general information on how to make sure she lasts!

I've got the same car and so far I've got no problems at 57000. It makes the stupid tapping sound when cold, but that goes away when warm and is inherent to the design (so they say). I think head gaskets are delicate on these engines also.
I'm modding mine slowly. -S |

I've had no problems with mine except the Alternator failure the second day of ownership, replaced under "unofficial" recall. The tapping sound mentioned previously is annoying, but no big deal. The climate control lamps seem to fail regularly so there are easy to follow instructions posted in various places, so feel free to ask if you should notice the backlighting gone. You'll find most of us mod crazy to varying degrees, and always wishing we had the TwinTurbo available to light up a few of the posers you'll run into.
You will probably want to upgrade the rear sway bar to at least 18mm(from stock 16mm) and upgrade the shifter bushings if you bought a 5spd MT, both easy and inexpensive improvements. Synthetic lubricants in engine and drivetrain appear to be well thought of by nearly all owners to prolong the life of our beloved Legacys as well. You'll find us a loyal bunch despite some of the shortcomings we've discovered because they're far outweighed by the Many Positives!! Don't be afraid to ask questions! Welcome to the fold! Glenn O |

I have no problems at 64k. Take it to a Subaru dealer because there is a recall on the alternatori(it is now official) and throttle body. Go to Subaru.com enter your Vin # and it will tell you if you are due for any recalls.

thanks for the help and info guys I guess the next step is to upgrade! I am looking at the rear anti-sway bar for the rear (from an outback) and springs and shocks (whiteline) have any of you done these upgrades? if so how did they go? Iam also in the process of "revamping" the intake and looking into Superchargers!

juju, I went the WhiteLine "low"(exactly 1" drop, "wagon specific" F&R) and KYB/AGX route about a month ago and couldn't be more pleased. I think I can still get you the part numbers if you're interested. All float is gone and the car really goes where it's pointed. I still have the struts set at "break-in" 2f/4r settings, but plan to play with them a little come spring/summer weather. I would also recommend the WhiteLine rear sway bar links as well.
I just installed a Competition Limited headlight harness last night in search of better lighting on the "cheap"($50) and very much like the JDM style side-markers I finished off a week ago as well. Sold them to the wife as safety upgrades , and won't go to higher wattage bulbs til the stockers are toast. Keep us up on your "super-charger" search details! Glenn O |

hey glen-o
I got this info from a friend of mine (who has a 2.5 GT as well) Great info on a SCer! I have my name in for further info! Now the big question WRX 2.0 install or SCed 2.5....hmmmm GO here http://rs25.com/Forums/ and then to the "Car Werks" section and then "Forced Induction" and look for the long thread about the supercharger kit comming from member "Templar"- - wait till you see the size of this thing - SUPER small... I want one BAD |

Man, are you in luck! Search under my screen name, and you'll find my adventures with my GT wagon. I had done:
KVR rotors and CF pads, turbo wagon sway bar (19mm...neutral), stainless Stromung, DMS Golds and 17" P1s. That wagon rocked, and I still miss it. My wagon was my suspension test bed, actually. I went from KYB/Eibach to Tein HA to DMS Gold. A rear strut tie bar really helps the body torsion issue, but I didn't want to give up cargo bay flexibility. That year seems to be a particularly good one. I beat on mine like it stole something (also lovingly maintained), and it ran beautifully. I got crazy money for it at trade-in time, too. You will probably notice (if you have a 5-speed) that the gearbox feels particularly good. People always asked if I had a short shift kit in my car. Kevin |

Wow-w-w-w-w!
purejuju, Thanks for the S-Charger info. Looks awesome! Now I have something to save some $$$ for! Keep us up on which suspension mods you go with and what you think. The one fubar I experienced was failing to transfer the rubber spring cushion on the rear struts. Got one of 'em completely in B4 realizing my error and had to disassemble and start over
Glenn O Oh, and listen to Kevin! He's tried it all! Last edited by nuburu2; 01-11-2002 at 08:54 PM. |

Hey GT GUY,
Yes I do have a 5 speed (if like there is any other option) It took me about 3 weeks of searching to find the perfect car and I think I did! it is silver 5 speed all the options and the guy I got it from lost a ton on it hehehehe. The upgrades I am planing on in the near future include white line springs, anti swaybar, strut brace (good thing my dogs are small they will still fit in the back with the brace) and I think KYB adj shocks and struts. I am waiting to see how the SC works in the field b4 I go with that upgrade. I think I will also join a friend of mine and get the cat back Brullen. There is going to be a group buy on Brullen exhausts and header/cat/exhaust systems through Febuary - the catback exhaust will be $469/shipped (msrp$649+), engine back will be like $1150/shipped.... I'm gonna get the catback... something to think about.... and we need 10 people to bet those prices (lesser discount @ 5). hint hint what do you guys think of the KYBs? I am fairly new to the Subaru game amd am unsure what all the options are that we have for struts. |

juju, Don't forget the shift bushing upgrade. KartBoy or Cusco, you'll be glad you did it as it takes most of the "rubberiness" out of the shift action and is dirt cheap. Unlike the 'short-shifters" it doesn't transfer a lot of noise into the cabin either!

The KYBs are fine for what they are, which is a low-priced, adjustable strut. With nice springs (Whitelines do come to mind) they can work very nicely.
And nuburu is right. The 95-99 Legacy GTs have wonderful shifters. Every RS owner who drove my car turned green with envy. All you need is an uprated bushing to firm things up. Were I you, I would do suspension, wheels/tires, brakes, then what few power mods are possible for those cars (exhaust, intake, underdrive pulley and whatnot). Kevin |
