Default How difficult to change transmission and rear diff. fluids?

Hi everyone,

So I'm fairly new when it comes to workin on the subaru, but I love it so much Im trying to learn. I have done the basics, or what I find to be basic work... Ive installed uppipe, headers, downpipe, exhaust, fuel filters... stuff like that. I was hoping to try and brave switchin out the transmisison and rear differential fluids, but was curious if its on my level or not. I was thinking it is, but im havin a little bit of trouble finding good information. Pictures of what I should be lookin for would be nice, as well as a step by step. Can anyone help me out with an opinion, advice or info?

Thanks,
Mike

Very easy. You will need a T70 Torx bit to change out the front diff/trans on a WRX so you will need to source one. If you have an STi you will not need this.

On the rear be sure to take the top bolt (fill bolt) first so you do not get stranded if you cannot get it out after draining the fluid out of it.

Easier than changing your oil IMO.

I think he only needs the T70 Torx on 04+ model wrx and since he didn't take any time to update his info we will never know what he has to do to change those fluids because we don't know what car he has.

Ya, without having any info I was trying to help in any way that I can. I forgot to add that it was different in the 02-04 Upon searching I found he has an 03 WRX.

75W90 GL-5 gear fluid for the transmisson (3.8qts, 5sp) and rear differential (0.8qts).

I will suggest 2 that you might want to consider. Either Extra-S gear oil or Motul 300. The first one is oem, non-synthetic fluid, and the latter one is synthetic.

Go with either of the 2, or your choice of gear oil.

Did you read what this guy Unabomber posted? Did you read the sticky thread now that you are in the right forum? You know, the one titled Maintenance FAQ that specifically lists every fluid you can possibly change on your car?

The reason why people here get hateful is due to people like you that can't follow advice given. READ the damned sticky thread....here is a direct link:

Unabomber if forced to be the janitor who get stuck cleaning up threads like this. If the forum was taken offline for 2 weeks and all the moderators and their friends went through this forum with a lice comb cleaning out threads like this, the search function would be a very awesome tool. Currently it sucks for anyone trying to search. Typing in a phrase is only the beginning of the battle, then comes all the sorting out the junk threads that have people asking "I need oil for my car" etc. etc. etc. I need to go take a shower.

^^ I found a few tricky parts:
1) Do the diff first because you can only get part of a bottle out holding it sideways.
2) Getting the bolts out of the diff. As said, do the top one first. Mine were in so tight I had to put a 1/2 (I think) ratchet directly into the hole and jack the handle up with the car jack.
2) You'll need to to buy or make some sort of funnel to put new fluid in the tranny.

The first link was different from the second link because he was trying to send you to two different places. Did you not read the posts, but just blindly click the links instead?

The first link wasn't incorrect, there's some kind of problem with the database right now. Go up near the top of the page and click on "UserCP" and you'll find it goes to the same place he linked you to the first time. The database is just not running properly right now.

lol WOW OP you just called UnaBomber a jerkoff lol
he is one of the major gurus and writeup-ers around here, i guess you would know that if you read the FAQ's/Stickys......

I clicked on this thread totally about to help you politely but after reading all the above all i got for you is
ever hear of being the bigger person and just keeping your cool while people flame you? that way your more likely to have a nice person come in, see your getting destroyed with "READ THE F'ING STICKYS!!!" or "SEARCH SEARCH SEARCH!!!" and just give you a quick answer/link you up to a thread that will help you out but now instead people just see you being a meany right back and no one wants to help you... its called an online COMMUNITY... it behaves just like the one you live in in real life.... you go up to people bitching and screaming that you want help your more likely to be greeted with little to none....

keep your cool man,

Check out sites like clubwrx.net; scoobymods.com; etc.... they have good writeups. if all else fails, go to your local subaru dealer and purchase the service tec. manual. that has all good stuff in it
