Report: Next Dodge Charger to Lose 500 Pounds, Offer Twin-Turbo I-4

The next-generation Dodge Charger could lose nearly 500 pounds and be available with a 300-hp twin-turbo I-4, according to a new report from Automotive News. FCA will move the Charger from its current Mercedes-Benz-based platform to an extended version of the Giorgio platform that made its debut beneath the 2017 Alfa Romeo Giulia, meaning the next-generation model will be slightly shorter in length.

AN’s sources also revealed that engineers and designers are working to cut the next-generation Charger’s weight down to about 3,500 pounds and that the twin-turbo I-4 could be the same unit that’s under development for the 2018 Jeep Wrangler. Before the next-generation Charger comes, however, the current model will receive another refresh for the 2019 model year while the new model is expected to start rolling off the production line at FCA’s Brampton, Ontario, plant in Canada early in the next decade.

During a private show for dealers last August in Las Vegas, FCA showed an early prototype of the next-generation Dodge Charger along with a revival of the Barracuda, which is rumored to be a convertible. According to dealers who attended, the car was reminiscent of the 1999 Charger Concept penned by former Chrysler design chief Tom Gale.

Don't like the prospects of FCA making a reliable twin turbo 4-cylinder engine.

If there's anything I trust ChryCo with, it's 4cyl turbos being overbuilt.

Look at the SRT4.

Yeah, that new engine could spell trouble. But, supposedly, they've been at it for a while now. So, we'll see.
I think going to all aluminum V8s instead of the current cast iron shortblocks would save a lot of weight (and would improve weight distro).

Making the car smaller and losing the weight is key. For me, I can't imagine buying a 4 cylinder for a muscle car if there is an 8 cylinder available for not much more money. There is just something wrong to me about a muscle car with a 4 banger and the missing exhaust notes...

The charger is the only ugly American car left. Both the mustang and Camaro finally got the right idea by making them look japanese.

That was a one-off engine for low volume usage developed by their Performance Vehicle Operations group. Chrysler used to do a lot of turbocharging in the 80/90's and those engines generally sucked for reliability with head gaskets that seemed biodegradable. My Daytona Turbo Z engine was garbage as was the 2.5L turbo they used in minivans and sedans.

I'm not sure I really consider a headgasket failure as a weakness. A gasket is a gasket and easily changed. A bottom end that can support 2x the original power output with a new gasket and maybe bolts? That's tough.

I have to agree. a known head gasket weakness is an easy fix. no complex engineering to figure out. Blame the beancounters and not the engineers.

Chrysler were part of the Global Engine Alliance (GEMA) with Mitsubishi and Hyundai.
Basically the same engine used in the Evo 10, Lancer Ralliart, Genesis Coupe, and the 2.4L version in the Caliber SRT4.

It's a proven platform, so I doubt the engine will be an issue.

The headgasket issue is really blown out of proportion though.

DOHC N/A 2.5? Yeah, those had real issues. IE: Blown gaskets that would cause overheating.

SOHC N/A 2.5? Yeah, they had a seepage issue. Never really resulted in overheating, just a little mess on the head that rarely even dripped on the ground. A lot of warranty claims because SOA would step up and cover them / recall that paid pretty well.

Chrysler no longer produces or uses those engines in any of their models.

I recall seeing a 2.4 Turbo Stratus (from Mexico) before the SRT-4 Neon was a glimmer in Ma Mopar's eye... .

The best (only?) thing about the Charger was that is was V8/RWD.

I mean I'm happy to hear that they are cutting some fat, and maybe they can turn the brand around, but when the least reliable Italian car company and the least reliable American car company get together, I don't expect anything magical.

The NA 2.4 is still used in the Journey, Compass, and Patriot.
The "Tigershark" 2.0 and 2.4 used in everything else are just the next generation with updated valvetrain and intakes.

Granted they don't have a current 250+hp turbo 4 anymore, but the baseline is still there.

Yeah, Charger is heavy, but, overall, it's well built.
I went through mine (2015 Charger RT) from top to bottom and I found a few minor things but everything else is well put together and that's immediately noticeable behind the wheel on either highways or backroads. You would expect a large unibody structure like that to flex out of shape when pushed hard but it doesn't; it feels very stiff.
I have 8000 miles on the ODO, and it's obviously too early to tell if my Charger will remain reliable in the long run, but it has already proven more reliable than my 2011 Forester. At 8000 miles, the FB25 in my Forester had already consumed 2 quarts of 0W20 oil.
The HEMI under the hood of the Charger hasn't consumed anything as far as I can see despite using a light 5W20 and I ran it just as hard as the Forester within the first 200 miles of ownership.
I know it's only going to be anecdotal but I'll keep you guys updated on what happens with the Charger as I keep driving it.

2017 Dodge Barracuda Concept

The Challenger is one of the best selling muscle cars on the US market and also one of the most appreciated because it managed to stick to the original recipe of a cheap car that offers a lot of power. However, times change and because its two main rivals, the Mustang and the Camaro, received major updates with new platforms and engines, now Chrysler has to do something in order to make the Challenger competitive again. It seems that the first thing they are going to do is rename the car and release it under the 2017 Dodge Barracuda brand. This has been first rumored back in January 2015 and the rumors seems to be true considering Dodge announced not too long ago that the Challenger will be discontinued.

Just like its competitors, the new model is actually going to make use of an all new platform which it will share with the future rear wheel drive Alfa Romeo and Maserati cars. This is a bit of a surprise especially since both GM and Ford went for a more American design. The European platform should allow for a much lighter car than its light competitors and it should make for an incredibly good car to drive.

2017 DODGE BARRACUDA ENGINE

Let’s start with the engines which will power the upcoming 2017 Dodge Barracuda. Firstly, the base model will not come with a V6 like the Challenger but rather a smaller turbocharged inline 4 mill. This could be a bigger than usual 2.4 liter Chrysler engine which will be turbocharged to offer more than 300 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque. The car should be faster than its main competitors while being similarly fuel efficient. Further up the range there should be quite a few engines available to choose from. There are rumors that the Maserati 3 liter twin-turbo V6 will find its way to the American market on the Barracuda. This engine could make with ease more than 350 horsepower and as much as 400 lb-ft of torque which is already more than its main competitors.

2017-Dodge-Barracuda-Engine

The top end model on the other hand is likely to stay American for starters with a naturally aspirated 6.4 liter Hemi with as much as 460 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. Some rumors also suggested that a 3.8 liter twin-turbo V8 with as much as 600 horsepower could come at a later date on the top end models. Rear wheel drive will be standard and the car should be available with a 6 speed manual or an 8 speed automatic. It might also be the first muscle car to receive all wheel drive for certain engine choices.

DESIGN: EXTERIOR and INTERIOR OF 2017 DODGE BARRACUDA

Unfortunately, at this point in time the exterior of the 2017 Dodge Barracuda is under wraps and not really available to the public. However, considering it will use a new platform the car will be smaller and lighter than the current model. In fact, it is expected to be similar to a Maserati GranTurismo in size. The front end will keep its Dodge heritage with similar headlights to the current model but with a longer and lower hood than before while the back will be quite a bit shorter.

The interior will also shrink from the current model and it will now be classified as a 2+2 meaning that in the back there is going to be less room. However, the materials will be much improved over the current car while certain packages will add things such as sport seats, leather upholstery or even a head-up display.

RELEASE DATE AND PRICE

The release date is likely going to be at the end of 2016 while the production model will be released in 2017 for around $60,000 which is right where its competitors are.
