Default Slightly Rough Idle in New XT

This is probably nothing, but asking is free, right?

I picked up my XT just over a week ago. I picked it up with slightly over 100 miles on it (they drove it from another dealer on a trade).

I noticed the second day that the idle would "bounce" a bit, meaning I'd see the tach drop ever so slightly, the engine would shudder a bit, and the tach would jump back up to just over 750RPMs. I figured it was because it was so new, and would smooth out in the next few hundred miles.

I'm at about 850 miles now, and it continues.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

BTW, the car is wonderful otherwise. The grins keep coming

Remember, boxer engines will "wobble" at idle a little. Try higher octane and maybe some dry gas. With the change of seasons there can be some condensation in the gas tank.

Thanks for the note. This is my first experience with a boxer engine, but this seems like more than that. It's a noticeable "shudder"

I already put 93 octane in.

Has anyone else seen this?

My XT exhibits quite a bit of variation from time to time in its idle smoothness. Sometimes it's fine; other times it shakes the whole car - not a lot, but enough to notice.

I chalk it off to the flat-opposed 4-cylinder layout.

Yep...I have the same thing (over 3000 miles now) and have had it to the dealer without resolution. They say it checks out as "normal." Of course, it also has a significant stumble between 2500 and 3000 RPM under hard acceleration. In that case, I've had the technician driving the car and saying that he doesn't feel a thing. Ugh.

yup, mine shakes when it feels like it too.

so did the wrx. but the wrx was a bit more rythmic. the xt seems to do it when ever. but she still runs strong . btw, i use only 76 or Chevron gas. nothing else.

Thanks everyone.

I'll chalk it up as "normal", but still may mention it at the first dealer visit.

My XT is still really new, 276miles on it, but my dealer cautioned me ahead of time that the 2.5L boxer has a lumpy idle so I've pretty much ignored it.

There are numerous thread discussing this issue over on the www.subaruforester.com Forum. The XT owners aren't the only one experiencing this. The N/A 2.5 has the same condition.

yup still shakes, rattles, rolls that's just the nature of the beast. she's still running strong. she even does it after putting 1, 2, or 3 bottles of octane booster. btw, she likes a couple shots of that stuff. again, my wrx did it after i got the vishnu stg 0 kit.

When my XT was brand new it didn't shake in the slightest. After the first 1k miles or so I began to notice a very slight shake now and then at idle. I'd read about the boxster engine "shake" so I wasn't concerned. Now at 5k miles it hasn't gotten any worse. My whole car certainly does NOT shake. It is very slight. If it concerns you you should certainly bring it up! If it is a problem it probably isn't going to get better. But you have ages and ages under warranty for it to be taken care of. I wouldn't be concerned. Enjoy your new toy!!!!

Cheers,

Bob

Just incase you hadn't thought about it ...

... check your A/C isn't causing your 'problem'. When that kicks in, the engine rpm drop for a sec as it starts the compressor ... then the engine compensates by reving slightly higher. This is COMPLETELY NORMAL
