Default ***PhatBotti Tuned: E85'ed 2011 STi, 330whp!! Per Gear Data + Tuning Discussed***

Event: Late night Airboy Dyno Pulling
Location: PhatBotti Tuning, Shelton, CT
Ambient Temp: 70F
Elevation: Sea Level
Weather: Humid
Tires: Stock 18's

Car: 2011 STi
Tuner: STi Mikey of PhatBotti Tuning
Dyno Info: Airboy
Transmission: Stock 6 Speed
Gear: 3rd
Peak HP: 328whp
Peak Torque: 371wtq
Baseline hp/tq for a stock on same dyno: 210whp (2011 STi)
Target Boost: 23psi
Target AFR: 11.3
Fuel: E85
Engine/Power Modifications: DW1300's / 3" TBE / Hallman MBC

This car turned out to be a nice holiday weekend project! Ryan came down from Albany yesterday after installing his Invidia exhaust. We Installed the 1300's and hit the streets last night for some E85 Tuning!!

This car has 3000 miles currently, so we left the tune very conservative for E85. Next month we will be installing an EWG setup as well as an air filter and fuel pump. At that point its time to goes balls out

Here is the graph:

I cant wait until the final product!! Ryan has plans to to auto-x the car, as well as throw it down the quarter to see what we can get out of it. I will be sure to update with results!

Onto the topic of per gear tuning. It really has not been discussed here in PPB in regards to the 2011 STi's. I figured I would take some logs and discuss some data as well as give my opinion on how it should be utilized.

Ron and I have discussed this topic a lot. He text me yesterday and requested that I do some 5th and 6th gear research.

5th/6th Per Gear Timing Compensation

No one really speaks of the 6th gear comps as they are not defined in Romraider/ECuFlash or Cobb.

First off, usage. I've talked to many different tuners and they all do different things with the per gear compensations. I think this is a great tool for the top end guys. I have a lot of stage 2 guys that like 150mph+

With this, I did a small 5th and small 6th gear pull. I was running 20* ramping to 27* at this point, and 0'ed comps in 1-4th gear, and pulled 4* out of fifth.

6th Gear

Code:
LOAD	RPM	IGN	IAT

4.09	3623	16	77
4.15	3694	16	77
4.03	3760	16	77
4.01	3834	16.5	77
3.98	3907	16.5	75
3.93	3960	16.5	75
3.85	4024	17	75

Code:
LOAD	RPM	IGN	IAT

3.93	3694	16	75
4.04	3726	16	75
3.99	3740	16	75
3.98	3788	16	75
3.96	3830	16.5	75
3.98	3841	16.5	75
3.96	3880	16.5	77
3.96	3914	16.5	77

As far as the 6th gear compensation, It seems it is defined from the 5th gear compensation. I only did one short pull in each gear with relative IAT.

Utilization of Timing Compensation in all gears

Outside of the 5th/6th gear data, not only are the per gear comps useful for tuners that have customers with top end fever, but also for people that love the auto-x and 1/4 mile.

In my opinion, you are completed leaving performance on the table if the comps are zero'ed in the lower gears.

More advance can be utilized in 1-3, I have my own numbers for this. Im pretty sure thats how some of these boats have gone 109-111mph on pump gas

To conclude, I think every gear should have its own ignition mapping different from the next. If not, the car is not being tuned to its full potential in terms of POWER and SAFETY

Please feel free to comment guys,

And have a safe holiday weekend!!!

-Mikey

112 mph on 93 and exactly!! Very useful and once u get some data together you can def put together a hell of a stg2 to big turbo beast like P&Ls 500+whp 11.

112! Holy crap, lol. Full weight im assuming? They are too nice to rip apart anymore, not like when i had 900 miles on my 07 and could give a "F" less it only had a seat and steering wheel in it

Im loving the 11's. Very potent vehicles with the new ecu tables

E85+TBE+Tune= just as much if not more power than the same car with intercooler, ewg, header, etc (aka 2x the $ spent) tuned on 93. Love it.

Your right about this one. I have a stage 1 WRX with only injectors and e85 that was trapping 107, 2 mph faster than the next stg 2 car the last time at the track (it was hot)

This car will be getting a few more bolt ons soon, I'm expecting 340whp with much less taper.

Its going to be a beast at the track for sure!!

Yea.. i couldn't believe it either, but a few have reported back with 110-111mph traps on 93 with the P&L OTS Stg2 kit which comes with my stg2/1 developed at P&L last fall.

We are a different breed mikey, Im all about tearing into a fresh ass car and going fast..

Same feeling toward the 11.. Every one tuned pushes me closer to pulling the trigger.

Sell the 07 get an 11 and lets have ourselves a little friendly competition!!

You know I'd still rip a 40k car apart for some friendly comp

Glad you are having success with them too. Like i said, the other stg2 11's I see at atco/e-town are trapping no where's near where they should (102-105mph)

When you gonna be around, I'm at atco a lot.

Oh man,

If I wasnt e-tuning today I would so come man. I was suppost to be at Atco tonight but just got way too busy. I have 12 files open right now for e-tunes and work just let out, lol.

Good luck tonight, drive it like you stole it. Are you using the FFS and NLTS options?? They work wonders even for quick shifters, really good stuff.

11's or bust!!

Good luck bro

Just some additional info regarding the per gear timing compensations....

They are actually available in all 2008-2011 STI's via the access port.

They are only in opensource in 2011.

Doesn't really matter, Ive talked to multiple tuners who use ecutek / cobb / OS and they just 0 the comps out. I figured I would dedicate some time to this subject so that people would start using these compensations to get more out of customer's cars, while still keeping them safe.

I feel no one is getting their moneys worth with any software if timing is not added in the lower gears and removed from the taller.

I know 2 people that have used the lower gear comps to their potential, and results are impressive.

Yes sir

Only with the AP though. I'm sure they can be configured through OS with some work via the romraider guys.

Im assuming the comps are not defined in the wrx ROM via OS becasue they have always been 0'ed for the wrx and sti until the 11' STi rom.

For record, you can not directly input values using the cobb tables with out specifying a per gear comp multiplier. I set it as 1 and directly input values for each gear.

In OS, the the multiplier for the 11' STi is already integrated into the per gear equation, so inputs are direct, and no multiplier is specified.

I don't use them because 5gear comp doesn't work on 6th gear - unless you fudge with the tranny gearing.

Did you post about that? Gotta warn these guys, I don't want to see a flood of stis blowing up.

Next question is what happens when you trick the car to never to see 6th gear??? Idk

And what about the 2/3 other gearing tables cobb and open source don't have?

It's a scary thought.....

I also don't trust the standard ecu logic that determines what gear the car is in.

Ecutek is adding per gear comps to racerom that will allow positive and negative numbers to be added/subtracted per gear - everygear. They also rewrote the ecu code that determines what gear you in so I'll trust that !

I'm sure cobb will follow suite

John, read the first post.....logging the timing in 5th and 6th is exactly what mike did to determine that the 5th gear comp works for 6th gear

Is it common practice for u to log the "gear"? Do u have logs showing the ecu "switching gears" in the middle of a pull? I've never heard of this.
