Default Buying an Outback. Looking for some info

My 04 WRX just gave up on life so I'm in the market for a 2010-2016 Outback. I have my eyes on a 2010 3.6r and was wondering if there's anything I need to look for; common issues, ect. So far I have taken a 2014 2.5 limited and a 2013 3.6r limited for test drives and like them both but the extra power of the H6 feels nice. Any advice/ input you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

3.6 fuel mileage suuuucks (by comparison), Old 5-speed Auto Trans up to 2014 (pretty bullet proof trans), pretty reliable, no major common failure points, occasionally when turning hard left or right and accelerating, c/v axles will pop/click, not a major issue till the boots split open. Oil changes every 3750 Miles, (Timing chain motor so no belt) Spark plugs every 60k.

Note = Not a design fail, but a lack of maintenance fail - All 3.6 motors are prone to engine damage from lack of coolant being topped off at service intervals. The 3.6 does not like to be run over temp at all. See all used high mileage Tribeca's on craigslist with blown engines, or just had an engine replaced for sale. It should have Subaru Super Blue Coolant, if its cloudy or looks like someone recently replaced the radiator and/or had the hoses off... RUN AWAY....

2010-2014 outback 2.5 have the warranty extension on the CVT to 150K miles. So unless you're looking at very high mileage example (or total loss/salvage) you've got some coverage. If there's an service history of any CVT fluid services would be a huge benefit.

Early EJ motors are timing belt motors, that's a big deal if it hasn't been done yet as the interval is 7yrs/105k miles. The early FB engines may/might excessive oil consumption, but you wont find out till you're putting miles on the car, unless there's paperwork to back up the short block replacement. However 5w30 rather than 0w20 slows oil consumption considerably if its an issue.

Great info, thanks. I'm looking for something hunker 100k (the 2010 3.6r has 50k) but was not aware of the temp touchiness so ill make sure to look long and hard. AS far as oil consumption, I'm used to that. My 04 was a Frankenstein and would burn just under 1qt every 3.5k.

Also, thanks for the tip on the hard turns, maybe ill try to make it happen on the test drive and use it to get the price down a little, haha

Thanks again for the info. I am now the proud owner of a 2011 Satin White Pearl Outlook 3.6r Limited.
