Meth kit or turbo upgrade?
My 2013 sti is soon getting rebuilt so i am planning on doing an upgrade while the motor is out. I am stuck between getting the fp blue turbo or the aquamist hfs-3. Car has all required parts for a turbo upgrade. The turbo seems to be less hassle after installed (won't have to mix/refill meth) but is a bit more expensive. I am limited to 91 octane gas in my area and i feel the meth kit would help my problem with the terrible gas. Also the meth kit is a bit cheaper than the turbo. I know both options would net a decent horsepower gain but i would like to know if anyone knows which would net me more? I feel i wouldn't beable to get full gains from the turbo due to the terrible gas. Does anyone have any experience or advice?

even with meth, the turbo will run out of efficiency. Just go bigger, you will run more power at lower psi at cooler charge.

My comment, FWIW since I usually do NA, a hardware upgrade is always there.
An addon is good until you run out of juice. Sorta depends on how often you want "power" vs. how easy is it to refill juice. Tuning comes in, I have no clue on how hard/easy it is to tune for an addon. Just things to chew on and maybe help make a decision. From what I know, I would go towards hardware, but that's me. |

Turbo. I only get 91 octane and make good power (360 whp w/Blouch 20G-XT 22T/205 hybrid). Had to turn the boost down 1 or 2 psi to avoid knock. Filling the meth tank would get old.

But the right answer for this guy is go with bigger turbo anyway. Also, meth kits are OK, but now that flex fuel is available, it makes meth less desirable. If you have E85, I would choose that over meth. And yes I've used both E85 and meth. And my current car has both and is running both. |

Thanks for the replies! Seems like everyone is thinking a bigger turbo. There is no e85 available, i live in rural Canada.

If you want to get full potential out of a bigger turbo you still need good gas. I vote get turbo, add meth later when you have the cash or vice versa.

Larger turbo. Although, a meth kit on a stock turbo makes for a really fun DD.
A buddy of mine has an 04 stock turbo meth set up making 350 whp/ 400 tq. It's a blast to drive. That lower rpm high torque puts you in back in your seat everytime with a smile. It runs out of steam quickly in the higher rpm range... it's always a tradeoff. |
