Default Toyota Mark X G Sports To Get Six Speed Manual

Quote:
Toyota’s quest to produce more exciting vehicles continues with a rumored 6-speed manual gearbox to appear in the G Sports version of the GRX133 Mark X.

The Toyota Mark X G Sports Concept we saw at the Tokyo Auto Salon in January was of course endowed with the 6-speed automatic gearbox found in the standard Mark X line up which straight away made us think of how good it’d be with a manual transmission. Toyota could very well make this happen with a little parts sharing exercise with its European cousin, the Lexus IS220d.

The Lexus IS220d comes with a 2.2L direct injected turbo diesel engine producing 177hp and 40.0kg/m torque and is only available with an Aisin 6-speed manual gearbox. The good news is that mating the Aisin 6-speed to the Mark X’s 3.5L V6 is high on the agenda at Toyota in an effort to continue the Tourer/iR-V lineage which stopped when the JZX110 Mark II went out of production. We can expect the 2GR-FSE 3.5L V6 in the Mark X G Sports version to rise by around 50PS over its current 318PS output and torque to rise to around 40.0kg/m, keeping within the limits of the Aisin 6-speed manual transmission.

At this stage only estimates are being thrown around concerning the price but we can expect the exterior and interior upgrades to add around 1,000,000 JPY (US$11,198) and a further 300,000 JPY (US$3,358) for the 6-speed manual. The base price of a Mark X 350S is 3,525,000 JPY (US$39,466) so the total price for the Mark X G Sports version could reach as high as 4,800,000 JPY (S$53,741).

And still they lament that they have no exciting product in the US to attract any sort of enthusiast buyer.

Yet they build this elsewhere.

A $3300 premium for a MT. That seems silly.

A ton of people would pay extra for an MT, oddly enough, including myself.

360bhp is enough, if it had more then there would be no need for a Lexus IS-F in Japan.

If it were a $3300 upgrade over a 5 speed, sure. If it's Auto or $3300 for a manual, I wouldn't just out of principal. There are a lot of car options out there.

The pictures at the top of the page though... I don't know, something about it looks like a 20 year old brah got his hands on some fiberglass body kit pieces for his Camry. Doesn't look clean at all.

The sad thing is, automatic is usually what bumps up the price.

Its RWD with a supercharged V6 and 360bhp, how is that a FWD 260bhp camry please? And the mark II/X has been around for about 40 years thats long before there ever was a camry!

Not for this one you wouldn't. The IS 220d manual trans is a clunky truck trans that Lexus used because they didn't have any other RWD manual transmissions and didn't want to develop a new one just for this model.

I read too quickly and thought it was named "G Spot". But if they bring it over here, it could hit the US sporty car buyer G spot...

Oh, I would too. But it's ashame that automatics have become so mainstream that to get a MT you have to premium.

You do know that the ES has always been a huge selling vehicle for Lexus and still is. And for what it is, it's a great vehicle. Now, if you're looking for something sporty, that is where the GS comes into play.

You have to be kidding me if you think it's a great vehicle for over $32,000. I owned a Camry V6 (Japanese-assembled) before I bought the Legacy, it was a perfectly decent vehicle for what I paid for it, but nothing special at all.

The G37 is a far superior vehicle in all aspects save for interior room. Even with the horsepower deficit, I would take a GS350 over a G37, but not for $12,000 more.

I don't think you understand. The ES is not supposed to be an athletic, sporty vehicle. It is a luxury, smooth riding midsize sedan that is priced affordably. Aside from the 3.5L V6, the Camry and the ES are distinct. The ES is far more than a glorified Camry. Go test one for yourself. There is a reason why Lexus sold 82k copies in '07.

The G, CTS and the ES may both be entry level cars but the goals of the former are far different from the latter.
