Default Mustang Tranny Possible Recall

Quote:
Feds investigating new Ford Mustang, VW Jetta

David Shepardson/ Detroit News Washington Bureau

Washington — Federal safety officials have opened investigations into new Ford Mustangs with manual transmissions over erratic shifting and diesel Volkswagen Jetta sedans for fuel leaks.

In documents posted Sunday, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it was opening a preliminary investigation into 26,000 2011-12 Mustang vehicles.

NHTSA said it has received 32 complaints alleging an unexpected inability to shift into gear on Mustangs equipped with manual transmissions that some suggested had nearly led to crashes.

Some reports said incidents occurred while merging into high speed traffic, while others said incidents occurred while turning left across oncoming traffic.

NHTSA also said it is investigating 40,000 2011 Jetta TDI vehicles after it received seven complaints alleging leakage from the fuel line to the fuel injector.

NHTSA said the common rail fuel system in the subject vehicles operates at extremely high fuel injection pressure — up to 1,800 bar/26,000 psi — and the incident mileages range from 2,470 to 7,764 miles.

NHTSA also said it has one similar complaint from a VW Golf also equipped 2.0L TDI engine.

The two investigations are not related. NHTSA generally investigates for up to a year before deciding whether to upgrade an investigation into an engineering analysis.

In many cases, an investigation ends before then — when either an automaker voluntarily recalls vehicles or the government ends the probe for lack of evidence.

Ford said it was aware of the investigation. "We will fully cooperate with the government as they review this matter," spokesman Wes Sherwood said.

VW didn't immediately return messages seeking comment on Sunday.

I have to say, the only issue I have ran into on mine is grinding into 5th. Why cant we just pull it together as a country and start manufacturing everything HERE again?

IB4 Mustang fanboys come in here and say the problem doesn't exist and it's the consumers fault.

People have said the same about the WRX tranny. Who cares?

Hopefully Ford will step up and get this problem addressed, as well as the MyFord Touch issues. They've made great strides in reclaiming a good reputation, now is not the time to stumble. Mulally has done an awesome job so far, I find it hard to believe he'll let everyone down now.

I OWN one and posted right above you that I do have a small problem with mine(5th gear entry).

Are owners fanboys as well?

That's completely unrelated. The "problem" with WRX trannies is that the owner modifies their car for more power than the tranny is designed for, and/or drops the clutch to launch it like a race car, blowing up their transmission in the process, then complains that the tranny is made of glass.

With the Mustang, owners are complaining that it's not going into gear.

They seem to have a lot of issues with the Mustang. A problem thread pops up on here for that car quite a bit.

Nah, I wasn't directing it at you. Just some people here that think it's made by the ford Gods with zero flaws and all the problems attributed with the car is the owners fault.

I think most of us know who they are.

And you just did exactly what was predicted, only for the WRX . Thanks for demonstrating my point. More than a few folks have blown up WRX trannies with normal driving. Classic fanboy response to say that they must have been abusing it.

Hell, a bone stock STI will do that right off the dealer lot .

And then there are the anti-Ford zealots who poop in every Ford thread. You guys aren't any better than the pro-Ford fanboys.

Yeah, I know you're talking about me, but you're certainly on the other end of the spectrum here. You never miss an opportunity to trash on these cars, so in my mind, your opinions are just as worthless as you seem to think mine are. Now kindly shut the **** up, and let the adults speak.

The problem exists, it's real, and Ford refuses to acknowledge it. Several guys have even had their trannies replaced only to have the problem happen again. It sucks. Unfortunately, even the guys with Bosses are having problems as well.

It's an awesome car with a junk transmission. But it's about damn time you admit there was a problem. How long did it take you to step off the mustang bandwagon?

This would apply to you and everyone else who entertains their anti <name car here> in threads. No reason to bite the bait....

Let's not start anything here...

You clearly don't see the difference in the types of complaints. One of them is user error and one of them is a manufacturer defect. You ABSOLUTELY should be able to put your car into gear every time you push the clutch in, but you can't seriously expect to be able to launch a car at 6K RPMs and expect no damage to occur. The car isn't made for that. That's like saying that riding around at max RPMs everywhere you go won't do damage either and that if it does, the manufacturer is responsible. Yes, the engine COULD do that, but it's NOT MADE for that.

This would be the first I've heard of this. Sometimes it's hard to get into 1st and reverse but that's due to the synchros(or the lack thereof). I'm able to get it into gear after a little extra force or by letting off the clutch a bit, but it does go in every time. If it didn't, I'd fully expect Subaru to replace it(if I was still under warranty, that is).

I'm still on it, I'm just willing to admit there's a problem. The issue isn't transmissions breaking because of (ab)use, it's obviously a manufacturing defect when the transmission won't go into gear.

It's still a great car. Plenty of manufacturers have issues all of the time. Subaru has had numerous issues over the years and they don't seem to have any problem selling cars. Likewise with Ford and every other manufacturer out there. If the MT82 scares you, buy an auto. They haven't proven to be any slower than their manual counterparts.

kind of hard to feel secure knowing that a guy named sling dong long in a sweat shop assembled the transmission.

best mod for this car seems to be an extended warranty. IIRC factory powertrain is 5/60k...about industry average and fairly decent.

Which doesn't mean jack if Ford isn't willing to help you. That's what bothers me the most about the situation - Ford is just trying to sweep it under the rug and pretend that a problem doesn't exist. They're going to lose all of those new customers that they originally brought in with the '11 GT.

or they could pull an "apple" and fix the next revision to the praise of the public and boost sales on the next model in the meantime leaving us high and dry with an even sh***ier future resale value.
