Most likely they had a professional tune the vehicle for them. Those tunes would be locked! another possibility is that the old owner wanted to sell the AP and un-married it from your vehicle and it is running on stock tune with Stage 2+ goodies and you are risking it! No way to check really without an AP that is married to your exact vehicle. You can check your AFR, Knock, etc.. and get logs via Tactrix Openport 2.0 or similar.. I would suggest you get a used AP or a new one if you can muster it ;-).. Then get an e tune from Clark Turner or Mike B. (or other tuners) this way you can be sure your 2011 wrx stays healthy for a good while!! best of luck

I've had some good experience with my '06 Civic Si street tuning through Flashpro and had good success tuning it myself through the software. Can I apply the same logic with APv3 and their software? I don't currently have AP, but I'm looking to install it as soon as my warranty is expired and I think I could do my own street tune. Has anyone done this with any success?
(Unfortunately, ClubWRX is essentially dead now and I used to be a member there, but I don't think I'd get any response there nowadays, so this is my first post here) |

Keep in mind though, you WILL need to do the 3rd party training to get the COBB tuning software......it will be keyed to your AP. No way around it. |

Can you elaborate on the "3rd party training"? Is this something that you have to pay extra for, or is it included with the AP purchase? And is this something that you just do on your own computer, or online, or something else?

Online course. Absolutely required to get the software to allow YOU to edit maps. Not needed to swap COBB OTS maps. Not needed to get a ProTune. If you have more than one AP and have already done the training, I believe you can contact COBB and get additional AP SN's added to your existing one. Go to COBB site, look up AccessTuner race. Course cost is $150 IIRC, on top of the AP cost. Note, up to a few years ago, you could just download the software. After too many peeps either installing the wrong map for their parts, or poor tuning, and killing engines, COBB went to covering themselves by requiring you to take a course to get the software. Even now, peeps don't read the mapnotes and install incorrect OTS maps causing issues. |

Wow, that's absurd. That's like making everyone take a special safety course when you want to buy a hammer.
As you say, people can do all sorts of things to break their vehicle, from loading wrong maps to simply using the wrong oil or not watching their gauges. Paying for "training" just sounds like another $$ racket to me. Maybe I'll send an email to Cobb and see if my Flashpro experience will translate to their software. Not expecting much, but it's worth a shot. Thanks for the info. Very helpful. |

Well, absurd or not, that is the method now for COBB. You can stick with OTS maps and do minor tweaks (I think change timing or a few other items), ProTune, etc.
Or, go open source for less money but less help. I have been dealing with COBB since AccessECU (send them your ECU and a parts list, they flash and send it back to you) through the various AP's they made. I have seen over and over people doing things wrong and a lot of times blaming COBB. As to your analogy, if peeps were hurting themselves with hammers, I could see hammer mfr's requiring you to take a class before buying a hammer. |

I guess ultimately it comes down to the old cliche, you gotta pay to play. Either pay with your own time and research (open source) or pay someone else to do the work (AP + training or Protune).
Thanks again for your help. Time for me to do a little more reading. |

Not saying they are right or wrong, just stating fact from close to 20 years dealing with the company and questions/issues over that time. Sorta along the line of Windoz/Apple vs. Linux. How much control or support do you want? Windoz gives more control, but has issues. Apple tells you to go pound salt, but mostly works. Linux lets you do a lot, but support is more limited, compatibility may be lacking. |
