Is that actually true? I mean, they're identical devices on the inside. Technically, there is no reason one should get updated longer than the other unless Apple does "X years guaranteed" updates, in which case the newer one will get one more year. But based on identical hardware, I'd expect them to be on the same upgrade cycle.

Because older generations are still for sale, I'm finding myself between 4 iPads that find themselves at similar price points (all wifi only):

2018 6th gen 9.7" iPad (128GB, A10 Fusion): $379
2019 7th gen 10.2" iPad (128GB, A10 Fusion): $429
2019 3rd gen Air 10.5" (64GB, A12): $469
Refurb 2017 2nd gen 10.5" Pro (64GB, A10X): $469

I honestly see no reason to buy the 7th gen iPad over the 6th. Maybe you get another year of updates? But the internals are the same, so maybe not. Either way, it's $50 for a slightly bigger screen. The problem is, at $429, why not just get the much better Air for $469? I could see getting the base iPad if you only want 32GB of storage, but the more usable 128GB model is a little too close in price to the Air. Probably on purpose, knowing Apple and their upselling ways.

That's why I'm pretty much between the 6th gen and Air. I'm not so sure about the refurbished Pro because it's from 2017 and while it still has a better processor than the current base iPad, it's the same price as the latest Air from 2019. So that's already 2 years of longevity gone at day 1 for little gain.

At the end of the day, I guess the Air is probably the best bet for future-proofing and all-around device per dollar.

For all intents and purposes, the 7th gen iPad is the 6th gen with a nicer display. They're both 64-bit SoCs with the same amount of RAM. Unless Apple were to do something arbitrary about iOS support on those devices, the two should be supported with the same cutoff point.

Im talking out of my ass but in generality the device will stop being supported by updates at some point. Id have to look at apples history if theyve ever cut off a same hardware base device at a different update.

Right, but usually when they do it, they're doing it for a reason. Like when all the 32-bit iOS devices got dropped and they went full 64-bit support only.

But Apple has locked certain features behind arbitrary "walls" at times, so who's to say that they might decide that a iPad 6th gen doesn't get iOS 15.2 but an iPad 7th gen does, and they run on the same SoC.

Not much to add:

I got an Ipad 4 or 5 years ago from my company as a Christmas Gift. I got a new one this year I still need to open/set up. I don't use the iPad for much more than a great magazine with Texture having pretty much everything I normally would have a subscription to. I don't have stacks of mags to deal with at home or having to pick some to travel with.

Nov' of last year the battery was being drained in a day even being generally unused. I didn't find an obvious reason that this seemed to suddenly start happening with pretty much years of use where I would charge it every other week at most with my limited rarely being under 30% charge, it was more a routine than necessity. I didn't want to jump on the artificial the problem bandwagon thinking Apple is trying to make me buy a new iPad having had mine too long. But, again I couldn't find a reason for the drain. Then it went back to normal battery use maybe having to charge it three times since Dec with no changes to the iPad or how its used.

Does this point to an obvious/known Ipad condition/problem/things that just happen you're aware of?

Yeah, batteries degrade over time and you've got a 5 year old iPad.

I don't know what else I expect out of an Apple thread.

Thank you.

"I love you. There was a bug in X-update fixed in Y-update that lead to draining the battery at unusually high rates around that time frame. Yore hair looks nice like that. If you didn't see update x replaced by y it may have been conscripted into a bot army explaining battery draining while you thought it wasn't in use. Check log x on the ipad and your router logs for oddities if not already running something that would alert you of oddities happening in real time."

Nice try, I don’t compliment anyone’s hair.

About the only thing you can do to help diagnose it is go to settings—>battery, and see if there are any outliers or trends. Apple didn’t put the battery health tool that’s on iPhones on the iPad, so you can’t directly see the reported battery % left. Anything below 80% is continued EOL on phones.

Has anybody tried the new mouse/touchpad support for iPad in a remote desktop client? Can you report how well it works clicking around in the Windows environment?

I have an OG Magic Trackpad and OG Magic Mouse, and for some (seemingly) arbitrary reason Apple decided not to allow their older Bluetooth mice and trackpads work with gestures/scrolling. Magic Mouse 2 and Magic Trackpad 2 are the only ones fully supported, then your mileage may vary with third party stuff.

With the original Magic Trackpad, I can click around on the screen. But since I have to touch the screen to scroll, switch apps, do anything...it's useless to me.
