Built into the phone the buttons are fully customizable. Hell, I don't even use them anymore. Motion gestures ftw.

No. Only Samsung has the patent for the mag stripe emulator. Also, only their phones have the hardware to do it. If you want to use your phone to pay at a terminal that can only swipe cards, Samsung pay is the only way to do it.

OneUI is better than stock Android. I love Samsung Pay on my Gear S3 Frontier. It's even more magical when you use your watch at a terminal that doesn't accept NFC payments.

I know Samsung Android UI is much better than it used to be but the s9 i played with when those were new was crap. Input latency was long and there was too much glitter on top of the mechanics of the UI. There might be some nice features, like Samsung pay, but they are of little benefit to me. Function over form all day for me.

.....No, I don't need an iPhone.

It's obvious you haven't used OneUI 2.0. It's vastly superior to even vanilla android.

at the speed I see terminals being swapped, it seems to me that this is a short term need.

with the exception of restaurants, I'd say that probably 9 out of 10 places I go accept my phone as payment.

even as frequent as 6 months ago, it was closer to 1 out of 2. so they are moving fast.

there are a few restaurants I go to these days that accept it, so I suspect it's only a short amount of time before they start accepting that stuff.

granted, I live in the city, in some places I'm sure they are still using carbon paper to make an imprint of the card.

realistically, the CC companies are pushing the tech to use chip readers vs mag stripe, when you update your terminal for chip reader, you get the google/apple pay bundled.

Still cool to have and it is fun to become a wizard at a place that has an old terminal. "Oh, we don't accept phone payments." "Hold my beer."

Eh I've heard conflicting reports on that. Something like even though it's there it needs to be enabled some how, and there are places who can run it but just dont' have it enabled for whatever reason. Hell, one of the big popular grocery stores down here has the chip readers (that work, because I've used them) but Apple pay doesn't work on it. 1/3 times I try using my phone the cashier warns me Apple pay doesn't work. *shrug*

Anyway, since getting back with a Samsung device Samsung pay has been the shiznit.

I should have added a caveat. new terminals come with it. just having a chip reader doesn't mean you have contact-less payment. pretty much any new terminals with chip readers (anything newer than a year or so) do have contact-less payment options.

the gas station near me has contact-less on every pump, but it is broken on some of the pumps. so yeah, totally plausible.

again, these are problems that probably will be resolved soon. but then again, soon might be 1 or 2 new cell phones from now.

and, yeah, it's always possible that the owner/GM/manager that set up the terminal chose to disable contact-less for whatever reason.

Yeah, so far every pump that has NFC on it that I've tried paying using my phone, it goes through all the steps like it is all good and then at the last moment it tells me unauthorized. This is total bull**** during the winter since every pump wants to play 20 questions with you nowadays before you can actually start pumping fuel.

I think the answer is always used flagship over new budget phone.

Samsung just offers so much more at this point, it's borderline embarassing but the Pixel fanboiz have cultivated a hivemind of "no features = pure" mentality in order to justify their iClone.

Just saw this on Reddit.

Received $350 from the Pixel class action lawsuit and still have my best phone ever.

I've noticed some terminals do this depending on what the cashier enters for payment. Some seem to treat phone payments as something besides credit because after it comes back unauthorized the cashier will change the payment type and it goes through.

Ended up with a cheap pixel 3. forgot that the 3a doesnt have a waterproof rating and the pixel 3 was half the price of the s10 and I couldnt get myself to spend the money.

For me it's the camera and photo processing.

oh and the free storage for photos is nice.

and I kind of enjoy getting the latest and greatest software as soon as it releases.

I am certain some folks fit your narrative: zomg no features = pure is why I'm still in my pixel.

they're kind of silly though.

I submitted mine as well, haven't heard anything back but it seems like i might soon.

I also still use mine today and wouldn't trade it. Maybe for a Pixel 4a soon if some $$$ comes back to me.

EDIT: AHHH freaking BS. Google spam filtered the followed up email saying they needed more information and my deadline was January 28th.

A couple of months ago I upgraded my 5 year old Note 4 to Resurrection Remix based on Android 9 Pie.

I'm very happy with it, but I noticed there are two apps that don't show up in the app store for me, but I know they are there.

All of my other apps we're fine except those two.

Wondering if I can download those on another Android 9 phone and try to aideliad the APK on mine.

Should be able to. I've sent .apks from my phone to a friend that even had a different manufacturer phone and older android, he sideloaded and they worked flawlessly.

The only caveat may be if you copy an .apk from android 10 to older android. They've made some big changes with 10 and some stuff from 9 or older isn't compatible.

Why not just go to apkmirror.com and install them? You could even make sure to get a pre-Android 10 version.

Personally, I wouldn't trust sideloading anything from there.
