Chain driven DOHC with new bore/stroke (probably same bore/stroke as 3.6 engine)
170 HP 174 ft.lb @ 4100 rpm (vs 170 @ 4400 rpm for 2010) |

Yeah! Maybe other flat-fours will get timing chains soon, too!

Same power as the current motor
Will it still have the 4 speed auto? |

1 mpg better and +4 ft.lb...that's it? Maybe they can squeeze 1 or 2 mpg more with a 5EAT or 6MT.
Timing chain is good Not a huge improvement but better than nothing, I guess. This will probably carryover to the Imprezas, Legacys, and Outback for 2012 MY. |

2011 Forester XTT??? (XT Touring)
Sounds kinda hot. I appreciate these "small" things that Subaru does from time to time. We're all fairly spoiled when we want BIG changes in the ride, but aren't willing to accept the price increase, either (unless it's "destination" charges, then we're cool with it). Bring the 2012 Subaru Forester XTiT Ltd. |

I wonder if this is a Dual AVCS engine like the EZ series.
And if they went to all that trouble to change the engine, but stuck with the 4EAT, then someone at Subaru needs to be punched in the face. |

DOHC is the biggest factor for me, personally. I had a 2004 OBS which was a decent car but the gutless SOHC engine was a wet dishrag for me. The move to a DOHC is great news in my personal opinion....chain driven is just icing on the cake.

This is great news!
No, it doesn't have DI, or a huge boost in power, but this is a great platform from which those items can be added. I'm really glad to see this happen—especially the addition of a timing chain!
No question that this engine will eventually replace all N/A 2.5 engines at some point. I'm surprised it didn't debut in the Legacy and Outback first? One thing is for sure: you will see even more intense cross-shopping between the Forester and Outback now. Also, if you add 2 more cylinders you get a 3,747cc H-6! Bob |

Powerband?
I'd love to see a graph that shows the powerband of this new engine—compared to the old 2.5 engine. I'm hoping it makes more power throughout the entire rev range, when compared to the old engine.

The chain is great news. My GT is at 106K, so just over the point where I need to get my timing belt serviced. My wife has an '01 H-6 with a chain, that will never need that.
It's 2010......nobody should have to worry about timing belts, I don't think. |

Phase in?
I would expect the Legacy and Outback will get this DOHC engine for 2012.
Impreza? I'm not so sure? I have a feeling this model might get smaller engines for MY 2013 (next model changeover), as that may be needed in order to reach upcoming EPA regulations. Bob |

Not bad, could have used a minor facelift and perhaps interior refreshening. It's now entering the 3rd model year.

Frankly, I think an N/A EJ20 would be pretty nice, given about equal power to the current EJ25.

From recent history, Subaru used different names for the EJ and the EJ derived H6 in the SVX, so I would assume that Subaru would use a new designation for it, something like EX or EY since EH is already taken for a line of their small Robin utility engines.

We'll know a lot more about what family this engine lines up with when Subaru tells us what the bore pitch is. EJs are 113 mm bore center to bore center while the EZ/EE engines are 98.4 mm. The smaller pitch would force these engines into a longer stroke smaller bore configuration but make the block shorter from front to back which will be useful if they decide to slip in an electric motor for hybrids. I think this is the new motor from the Geneva show. Go here and click on "Petrol" http://www.subaru-global.com/special...ial/index.html Last edited by GuyLR; 07-02-2010 at 01:10 PM. |
