Instrument Gauge vs. UTEC
A friend of mine installed some reverse indigo gauges today as a late BDay present. I know that the WRX normal fuel cut is at 7250 rpm however when I went driving today after the installation, I actually hit fuel cut at 7K rpm according to the tach. Then I ran the UTEC to see where the difference lies but the result was even more strange.
My idea was that the UTEC would show 7250 rpm while the tach would show 7K rpm which would means that the installation somehow messed w/ the tach by 250rpm which is fine. However the UTEC showing 6750 rpm while the tach was showing 7K rpm, plus fuel but somehow moved to 7K+ rpm according to the tach. Anyone have any ideas on how to solve this problem? Thanks.

the utec has to get its information out via a serial interface. as such it has a bit of latency and it cannot send a continuous stream of real-time data out the port. it will always lag a bit in REPRESENTING what it is reading. rest assured that it does know the exact rpm, at least as exact as it can "know" it given the signals from the crank position sensor.
the tach is a physical device and also has delay or latency to contend with. jm2c ken |

were you using the UTEC's fast-logging or normal slow logging? The fast-logging tends to be innacurate as far as the samples go, but the slow-logging might not get the last sample before you hit redline if you're in 1st or 2nd gear accelerating fast.
It sounds like your gauges are just messed up now. Replacement gauges can be had from www.subarugenuineparts.com for ~$75 (tach/speedo) and ~$50 (fuel/temp). Last edited by nhluhr; 06-13-2007 at 02:30 AM. |

Update
1. I was using the normal UTEC logging method.
2. We have solved the problem. The new reverse indiglo faces cut down on the tolerance between the spindle and needle of the tach. Shane did his magic as usual and everything is as it should be now. I figured it wasn't anything too serious but a lesson learned yet again. |
