Transmission Click/Pop Sound - please help
When I downshift -(happens mostly going from 2-1) and the clutch is released. There is a click or a pop that happens. Nothing grinds, you let the clutch out, it feels as if it sinks up and pops and feels like it sits into place.
Is this something I need to look into? Is it the front differentials adjusting to the new gear? Will one of the transmission cocktails I keep hearing about possibly fix this? It's an 05, 5 speed with 31k miles on it. |

its your blocker ring slowing down your first gear... how hard are you pushing on your stick when putting it into first... also how fast are you going

thanks for replying.
I wasn't going that fast, it has happened going from 2-1 I was traveling around 15mph, with relatively low rpms (clutch was engaged so they fell slightly). It has also happened going from 3-2. I know what the blocker feels like (my 92 ranger had one as well) but this is after I have put the shifter into the first gear and let out the clutch, it sorta just pops and sits into place. any ideas or just normal function of the awd? wait first thread you said 2-1 and now your saying 1-2... im confused. does this seem to only be a 2nd gear problem or just a down shifting problem?

also it say clutch is released. is this while downshifting? i just want to clear this confusion up before misdiagnosing.
as of right now if the clutch is depressed and you get a clunk noise it may be your blocker rings in the synchro's wearing out, causing the synchro to lock on to the gear somewhat aggresivly. is this clunk noise your hearing a continious thing, like does it happen everytime you downshift and not just something that happens when the tranny is cold? |

This is the list of actions:
1) Traveling 15ish mph 2) let of the gas 3) press in the clutch 4) shift from 2-1 5) let out the clutch 6) after clutch catches this is where the pop/click sound happens it feels as if the engine/trans sits down as everything syncs up. |

Update:
After driving today I found this is not limited to down shifting. This will also happen during the following: 1) Car is in 1st gear (has happened in 2nd but more common in 1st) 2) The car slows down (not enough to stall the clutch or push in the brakes) 3) Push the gas (not floored but normal acceleration) will be followed by an immediate *Click/Pop* Taking this to subaru today. |

OP: hold up.... if you're under warranty, take it in. That's what they get paid for. If not, get under your car and see if you have an axle nut loose. There is a thread on here (kind of recent) that has this EXACT same problem where there was a single "click" noise. See if you can find the thread and troubleshoot that first.

So I stop by the dealership and one of their mechanics went on a ride with me.
Of course the car acted fine and only gave a very mild example. The mechanic swore up and down that it was a normal function of the car, particularly the awd aspect. He also eluded to the fact that I didn't know how to drive a manual transmision, funny how I've been driving manual cars for almost 9 years now. he also said that there is no way that it could be an axel nut. Go figure. I leave the dealship, driving home and of course it does it again. WTF - does anyone know what this is? (I've got about 5k left before my warrenty is up and I would like to get it fixed before then.) |

same happens with mine (02 wagon) traveling going about 15 to 20mph slowing down to come to a stop or just slowing period i take it out of 3rd or 2nd which ever i am in to slow down and hear the sound.
so its basically like so... 1. going 15 to 20mph 2. brake and step on clutch and shift to N 3. click/pop noise. 4. i say "wtf was that" the crappy problem is whenever i try to show someone it never happens and it doesnt matter whether the car is warm or cold. |

....I have tightened many axle nuts......and got rid of this noise
...it almost sounds like a small glass rod breaking----one single 'click' tighten axle nut(s) and no more 'click' This one drove me nuts....and the 'techs' at the dealership were absolutly CERTAIN that it couldn't be the axle nut. .....now the service manager of that dealership calls me 'Dr.' 'cuz I 'fix' many of the issues that elude them |

Well not to bring this back from the dead but...
I took the car into subaru to have the pop/click checked out because my clutch started to squeek when you'd put it 1st from neutral (car was not moving). Turns out the pressure plate had several teeth missing/grinding. My car was luckly still under warranty ($1,200 in repairs) so reader beware if your car is making a funny noise and you can't find out what it is or fix it. You need to get your car looked at. |
