IMHO it depends on several things. First, what is wrong with the engine and are the heads in good shape? Next, what is your budget and power goals?

If the heads are good, I'd pick up a new 2.5L SB add a new oil and water pump, new idler and timing belt, put it in and be happy.

i have over 3 grand to spend. i would like to add more power if cheap but mainly just getting it fixed. i dont know exactly whats wrong. I just know the insurance wont cover it cuz it blow due to over heating or over revving. 2.5 sb is that just the 2.5 l non turbo impreza motor

Sorry, EJ257 or EJ255 2.5L. $3K budget will be tough if the heads are damaged, but if you shop around you can probably swing it, but may have to do the work yourself.

VER7 or VER8 are both superior engines to what you have now. They both run on open source as well. I am not sure how difficult or straight forward the install process is, but I'd drop one of these longblocks in well before throwing in a USDM block or longblock. Then again, you may be paying some decent money to get one of these engines. This said, they have a rev limiter at 8500RPM and won't kill your trans as fast as the super torquey USDM 2.5L.

But if you are on more of a budget build, I'd go with what Bill said and do a brand new in the crate STI shortblock (seen them for $1500), along with some ported EJ205 heads, slap them together with all new parts Bill mentioned and you should have a great engine for $3K with a proper tune.
