Default JDM Longblock Swap - Need Help

I have a 2002 WRX with an EJ205 motor that has a hurt shortblock. I purchased a longblock listed as a JDM Subaru 2.0L DOHC turbo impreza EJ20 motor. Parts included are as follows, just to be clear. The longblock will still be fully assembled and has been through a compression check.

- Complete Motor
- Complete Head and Block
- Intake Manifold
- Distributor
- Injectors
- Fuel Rail
- Power Steering Pump
- Throttle Body
- Exhaust Manifold
- Alternator
- Turbo

At the time, I didn't know anything about the various EJ205/EJ207/EJ20G/EJ20K motors. I will be unable to speak with the tech that pulled the motor to verify the equipment until at least tomorrow but I can be sure it is not the twin turbo EJ motor. The salesperson I spoke with assures me that it will work in my car with my factory wiring harness and I could possibly need to swap the intake manifold.

With that said, what is the best/worst case scenario with these motors? Are any of the possibilities going to be a direct drop in?

the 205 or 207 will work, the 20G and 20K will not work with your manifold or cam and crank sensors.

P.S. i would ask about the Distributor listed in your list. no USDM EJ ever had a distributor.

THANKS for the fast reply!

LOL, I copied the details from a different engine they offer since mine is already shipped. I guess I forgot to remove that. TY.

Also, if it were to end up being the 20G or 20K. What would be the best solution? Can parts be cannibalized between the two to make it work? If not, what WOULD I need to get it to work?

Should it be the JDM 205 or the 207, will it drop right in and connect without any additional work? What should I expect for power and torque numbers if it is one of these two motors with the factory turbo from that model?

Sorry for all the questions at once. I feel like my head is swimming with Subi motor info and I my understanding of these motors may actually be going backward after all the reading I have tried to do in one day. Thanks again!

EJ205 or EJ207 longblock will work with your stock intake manifold and engine harness. Pretty much plug and play. If it is one of these two engines, I would tear it apart and rebuild it. Get some ARP head studs, resurface heads, a valve job, timing belt and maybe a new thermostat. I'd also think about getting the car tuned.

I have more info on the engine. I'm fearful it's the worst possible news. The engine came out of a JDM 93 WRX. As far as I know, that means it's an EJ20G.

KEEPING IN MIND, this is just a DD. Power is not the focus. (although it never hurts, huh) Is there any hope for this longblock in my car? I have been reassured by the tech, that it will work with my factory wiring harness IF I swap my factory intake manifold.

Your intake manifold will not bolt up to the heads. It's more trouble than it's worth to make this work.

The only thing of any use to you is the 20g shortblock. If your heads are good, this is at least an option.

the heads will not work with your ECU eather. the cam sensors are different. and as RSmatt said your intake will not bolt up to those heads anyhow.

i hope you didnt pay for it yet... if you did i would get my money back. a EJ20G will not work with your EJ205 ECU.

Is it possible this car can be put back together with another ECU and wiring harness off an EJ20G setup?

Yes and No. While the engine will bolt up to the trans you will either need a 20G ECU or stand alone EMS (e.g. ViPec, Link, etc.) and a harness merger. While probably not what you want to hear, a replacement EJ205 or a EJ257 with your heads ( assuming they are good) is a better alternative.

possible: YES

good idea: NO

you would have to compleatly rewire the car, it would no longer be OBDII, and you would then have a 8 year old car with a 17 year old engine in it.

in the long run it would cost you way more to have an older (may not work for long) engine.

your best bet is to get a different engine, and hope you can sale the EJ20G for close to what you bought it for.

Thanks for the info.

So, on that note... I now have a 2002 Blue WRX, bone stock, blown motor, and 148K miles on the clock - for sale. A ~45K mile EJ20G motor with parts listed prior and an 03 Cobra Convertible with 37K miles are also for sale. Please PM me or stay tuned for the official for sale listings in the proper section.

you need to get your money back

there are NO JDM engines that will bolt in place of a usdm 205.. zero

even the jdm 205 (of which there are at least 4 versions) are different .. the closest dosn't have TGVs, which would start but be stuck in limp mode

if he won't refund it do a charge back ...

Could he just use the shortblock from the EJ20G with his stock heads, manifold, ECU and engine harness?

if all he needed was a EJ20 Short block, it would have been much cheeper than buying a whole engine...

heck i have a short block from a EJ20G in my basement... if thats the route you wanna go, with a 15 year old short block. PM me. and send the EJ20G back...
