Default 2019 Toyota RAV4 Unvieled With New Tough Look

2019 Toyota RAV4 unveiled with tough new look

More aggressively styled SUV comes with hybrid or petrol powertrains only

Toyota has revealed a new and much tougher-looking RAV4 that will face off the Ford Kuga and Nissan Qashqai next year.

On show in New York, the Toyota New Global Architecture platform-based SUV has been launched with one hybrid option and one petrol variant.

No diesel model will be produced, as per Toyota’s plans to phase out oil-burning models before the end of 2018.

The entry-level powerplant at launch is a 2.0-litre petrol. No specifications have been revealed as of yet, but it’s likely to build on the four-pot motor of the same capacity in the outgoing RAV4 that offers 149bhp and a claimed 43.5mpg. The new car features an updated all-wheel drive system that can disconnect the rear axle to improve fuel economy.

Next up is a 2.5-litre petrol engine that works with an electric motor. Like the 2.0-litre unit, no numbers for the hybrid option have been released, but it will better the 194bhp and 55.4mpg on offer in today’s version.

Toyota may choose to offer a second hybrid variant to fill the gap left by its discontinued diesel RAV4 at a later date. The recently revealed Auris comes with a choice of two hybrid powerplants, a 1.8-litre and 2.0-litre mated to electric motors, suggesting one of these could be added to the RAV4's line-up.

The 2019 RAV4’s more muscular new look is emphasised by squared-off wheel arches and shorter overhangs than the current car.

Inside, there’s a plusher cabin that gets a centrally mounted infotainment system above a cleanly designed console. Exact specifications will be revealed in the run-up to the new RAV4’s launch, but dual-zone climate control and leather seats were included in the (undoubtedly high-spec) New York show car.

Toyota says the car is 10mm wider to offer improved interior room and boot space.

The new RAV4 will arrive in Britain in the first quarter of 2019, when no diesel models will be sold by Toyota. The brand is making aggressive adjustments to its range to boost efficiency and respond more directly to demand. It recently revealed intentions to axe the Avensis from its UK line-up as part of this process.

A hodgepodge of 4Runner, Highlander, RX and NX. Of which Toyota will sell a ton.

Not bad. Between this and the new Corolla hatch, I believe Toyota's design is improving finally.

Wow. This is a redesign that spared no expense. And one that looks better and more unique than the current iteration. Well done Toyota.

The black/floating roof thing is getting old and won't age well.

I think that looks really good, much better than the current model. I really like where Toyota is going with their new models. If feels strange to like Toyota stuff again...

I like the new look. It does remind me of the new Jeep Compass.

Sounds like the RAV4 will also have an available torque vectoring AWD system too.

Wish this was going to be out sooner than later, as the wife needs something to replace her 2014 Forester, which is buring a liter of oil every 1,200-1,500 miles and has a brake issue.

Looks great, and agreed on Toyota styling... wish it would carry over to Lexus so they'd get rid of the godawful spindle across the board.

Are you guys covered under the extended warranty on your Forester? Us oil burners got extended to something like 7 years / 100k miles. I have to take my Impreza back in to get an oil leak looked at after my shortblock was installed.

Damn, I like it a lot. My father bought a new Rav 4 and overall I really liked it. Only gripe was the seat bolsters were a little tight on me but it drove well. I’d love to see a EV version of this with a range of 250-300 miles per charge.

-Hyundai Kona front end
-Jeep Cherokee wheel wells
-Ford Edge rear C pillar

I don't think the two tone paint/roof is standard.
Black roofs will still make the whitest of white cars so much hotter inside during peak summer months.
My wife's white Ford Edge has a black panoramic moon roof, and it's so uncomfortable on hot sunny days because of the UV radiation. Air conditioner doesn't help. I have to wear a hat...but I'm also bald. So I've thought of getting the moonroof double tinted from inside.

Looks like a Toyota 4Runner and Toyota FJ Cruiser had a baby with some Ford Edge and Volvo XC40 ancestry. As usual, Lexus' obnoxious grille and front overhang is a massive bucktooth.

A little too busy looking to be called handsome IMO. Also if you are going to have the ipad sticking out of the dash style infotainment system at least outfit it with a large screen. That looks awful with the tiny screen surrounded by buttons and giant black bezel.

Personally I think the Blue/Grey color scheme is pretty good:

They did a great job with this.

The looks might go a long way with the CUV folks.

The blue one has a totally different front end. I assume one is for a different market.

White is the hybrid model, blue is likely standard model. Toyota typically gives upper trims and hybrids different front ends. It's very C-HR but scaled better for that design, IMO.

the blue is the "Adventure" model. AKA the more rugged/off-road variant. Note the Tacoma/4Runner like grill.

I believe this is the model that will have the torque vectoring AWD system. Not sure if there's any other upgrades such as suspension etc.

So nobody is going to comment on the hexagonal fender flares that look identical to the VIZIV?

Just out of the VIN range, so says Subaru.
