Default Clutch Chatter

Anyone have a problem with their '00-'02 Outback wagon with clutch chatter, especially when the car is cold? Can't seem to get the clutch to work smoothly, but after 15-20 minutes, no big problems. Don't know if it's engine, driveline or clutch.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Are you getting noise? or are you talking about getting engaging the gears? In the morning, I do notice a little lag. I also notice something really weird. Regardless of whether it's in the morning or not, if you have your defroster on, maybe around 1 or 2, I notice the same thing, a lag.

This is a problem on the 2.5RS as well, and if you're still under warranty, i'd recommend taking it to a dealer.

It is actually caused by the flywheel. It causes uneven wear on the clutchplate which is only noticable when it is cold.

*Most* people have had trouble getting Subaru to acknowledge it, and rarely will they replace it. Mine is *awful* for the first 5 minutes on cold mornings, and I have just gotten used to it.

I think I'll wait until it is *really* bad, then I'll probably have a better chance with Service.

... also hoping to get an aftermarket clutch, whichever comes first!

Thanks for all the ideas. Assuming I can't get the dealer to cover it, is there a good aftermarket clutch/flywheel combo that works well?

Greetings Clutch-Chattering Subaru Owners.

Tried everything? Clutch still judders on take-off, hot cold, feathered or dropped?

I've been there too. My 01 Outback juddered badly, and after 3 replacements by the dealer, I SOLD THE CAR

Help is finally on the way. A major US clutch manufacturer has decided to research and SOLVE the clutch judder/chatter problems on Subarus, once and for all.

You can help. We need the names of a half dozen Subaru owners in the South Carolina area with unrelenting clutch judder/chatter problems who are willing to drop their car off for a few days for examination, repair, and possibly even a free clutch replacement.

Drop me an email directly @ wadelinked (aat) wadenelson .... com if you are this person or know this person.

The newer clutches do not have the same problem. There is also a sleeve from PDM that will solve the problem if you want to do all the labor to pull your clutch but not replace it.

Yeah, this has been discussed to death over the last several years. It is/was common, but can supposedly be fixed with a new flywheel and clutch (and the extra protection of the PDM sleeve as mentioned above)...

And try the cobb lightened flywheel if you want a more performance-oriented feel. I LOVE mine!!!
