Wideband and ECU
*Sorry if this isn't the right section.*
I'm prepping for open source tuning right now, and installed the AEM UEGO wideband o2 sensor and gauge, wired it up and have the logging cable readily accessible. My wideband o2 is installed on the bellmouth of my downpipe. After reading this post, I was wondering if it is necessary to replace the rear o2 sensor with a wideband sensor as well for the ECU to properly adjust closed/open loop operation. Is the bellmouth wideband o2 adequate if I'm logging for a custom map even though it doesn't communicate with the ECU? I apologize if the question seems a bit ignorant, I just want to make sure I'm headed on the right path to open source tuning by getting the right hardware and reading the right guides.

You need only the AEM UEGO installed where it is now. Leave the stock AFR and O2 sensor alone.
You really should do more homework on this. Especially before you go as far as to start reprogramming your ECU. |

The rear O2 can be left alone (but I wouldn't remove it - some of the Subaru ECUs will act up even if you disable the relevant DTCs).
The bellmouth WBO2 is the only one you need for tuning. The front O2 is all that is really needed for closed loop on an OEM ECU-based tune. |

I would also move that O2 further down the Down pipe if you want it to last.

40k in the bellmouth on mine without issue - if you're running leaded fuel, it'll kill them pretty fast.
My tuner says he recommended against running the WBO2 24/7 to his Rally America customers and none of them listen, but they've all gotten multiple seasons out of the Bosch units so it's really not a huge deal these days. They're really not that expensive if they do go out, though. |
