Default WRX For Insane Low Price - Sound Legit ? Scam?

I found an ad for an insanely low priced WRX I'm thinking of buying. The guy claims that the car was abandoned at a NYC airport. Then this guy bought it from the port authority for 10 grand, he is adding some profit (couple grand) and selling to me. Those aren't the exact numbers but you get the idea.

How can I verify the car isn't stolen or something else funny? He's giving me the VIN, but will Carfax tell me if the car was just stolen a day or two ago? I wanna verify the car is legit.

As long as he has the title and a receipt from the port authority I wouldnt worry about it too much. There is a lot of paperwork that has to be done on abandoned vehicles. Need to make sure that the VIN does not belong to a bank.
On the other note though, you dont know whats wrong with the ca.

you can always call the DMV or the local police and give them the VIN to see if the car was abandoned, stolen etc...

Well, in order for it to truly be his then he must have papers to prove ownership. Have him show those to you and ask an attorney or a judge if they would be legit enough to hold up in court in proving that the car is not stolen. A lot of people will just say "SCAM...don't fall for it" but weirder things have happened. A friend of mine got a 2005 EVO with only 10,000 miles on it for $12,000 last year because the guy who baught it lost his job and was being inspected by the IRS, he needed the money like that week, so my friend came up with $12,000 and drove away with a practically brand new$30,000 car. It still runs perfectly a year later.

My point is....If he can prove that he is the true legal owner, you have the car professionally inspected, and it's the one you want....I say why not?

I had a friend who bought abandonded vehicles pretty often. I forget how he got them, they get transfered to the garage at some point if no one comes to pay for them.

IIRC from talking with garage owners around here after a certain amount of time all they have to do is contact the state and apply for title.

I wonder how long the car needs to sit there and how many attempts at contacting the owner need to be made before the car is deemed "abandoned property".

Another thing is, if the previous owner didn't care enough about the car to sell it, or whatever, then how do you think he treated the car when he drove, maintained, and washed/waxed the car? That is really the only thing that matters, other than the title.

You can't just assume that because it was abandoned it has been abused, maybe he/she was murdered in a different city, or hurt and never made it back to pick up the car. Maybe he/she is a fugitive and split, I mean there are many reasons one may have left it there, so just have it checked out and if it is good buy it up.

def do your research, you may be on to a good deal! dont listen to the haters.

i found my car for a deal at the time too. found it on the internet, thought the price was a typo. it was a nice day, so i went for a 4hr drive to take a look at it. got there, car was mint, title clean, carfax clean. I walked away from the car, thought it was too good to be true. stopped at the subaru dealearship on the way home and saw how much a new wrx was going for at the time, (04's car was an 04 also). car had only 8K miles, decided to go for it. havent looked back since, no problems or anything. now the price wasnt a steal like this one, but it was the best price i had ever seen up till that point. moral of the story, sometimes its not too good to be true. do your homework and you will be fine. let us know how it goes!
