Default Whats the proper name for just a standard martini?

I mean one with just gin and vermouth?

If i say gin martini, i get "on the rocks?" "dirty" etc..

If I say a classic gin martini i get this confused look.

martini

if you say that, you should get gin, dry vermouth and an olive or lemon twist

looking at menus at various restaurants I don't think such a thing exists anymore. There is an oontzy martini bar by my house that I may consider hitting up some time though.

Martini.

Not to be confused with the myriad of mixed drinks called martinis simply because they are served in a martini glass.

I thought it was "neat" when you wanted it like normal. What the hell does "neat" mean?

It is a martini, plain and simple.

Gin, vermouth, garnish.

If it has vodka, it is a vodka martini.
If it has olive juice, it is a dirty martini.
If it's on the rocks, it's gin on the rocks.
Neat is just liquor in a glass, no ice.

The dumbass bartenders around here have to be walked through every step of it.

"Bombay Sapphire martini, please."
"Like, with gin? Rearry?"
"Yes, with gin."
"No vodka?"
"Gin. Bombay Sapphire."
"You don't want a Raspberry Twist Cosmotini or something like that?"
"No. I want gin, vermouth, and a ****ing olive. Shake it and you die."

Arrgghh.

More like pussified. It's not the end of the world. The dryer and colder, the better, in my book. Standard pimento olive is the best.

I'm trying to imagine gin-infused bleu cheese. I can't do it.

It's not the bartenders fault...they are used to morons ordering all that crap, so they are a bit snakebit. They need to make sure they get your order correct, because a plain martini is a rare order these days!

i hate that now if you ask for a martini you get vodka. I shouldn't have to specify gin in my martini god damn it.

What's the difference between being shaken and stirred (not a James Bond joke)?

some say that shaking can bruise the liquor. (meaning to combine it with air and change the flavor)

Vodka "Martini" drinkers will burn in the eternal hellfire IMO.
