Default no boost- wrx problem

Hey guys,
Here's my situation. I went out to get some supplies for a group project and everything was fine. Four hours later I'm driving to work and I notice I have NO boost, not even wastegate pressure. There are no weird noises, no smoke coming from the engine bay or tailpipe, and I can't hear the turbo spool or any whistling boost leak sounds. Here's some more info on my car:

03 WRX- 84,000 miles
Engine modifications- Cobb Stage I, K&N filter

I bought the car with the K&N filter about a year ago, and I reflashed to Stage I about 8 months ago. Any help would be fantastic. I'm getting scared!

Thanks a lot,
-Brandon

Check the wastegate arm to see if the clip that attaches the arm to the wastegate has come off. This is a common cause for zero boost with no other symptoms. If you still have the stock turbo and heatshield you may need to look in there with a light as the arm and clip are under the shield.

Alright dude, cool. I'll check that out. I still have the stock turbo, but the heat shield has been removed.

Just one question, I thought if it was a problem with the arm-wastegate clip, then you would make wastegate pressure around 7.9psi? I'm probably wrong tho.

Regardless, i'll check that

Thanks, and bump for more suggestions!

that was my first thought as well. I also thought maybe my uppipe cat disintegrated and killed the turbo, which would be ironic bc this happened the day after i ordered a catless UP.

I'll check the clip, and if that doesn't work I'll invest in another TD04. After i get the turbo off, is there a way to check it to make sure it's siezed and that's the problem? will it just not spin at all?

If your cat gets eaten, It makes a loud bang when it goes away.

Sounds like a seized turbo.

Yea, just pull off the downpipe or the turbo inlet pipe(the downpipe would be easier, especially since you have no heat shield) and try to spin the turbine. If it doesn't spin easily (i.e., several revolutions after you spin it with your finger) then it's toast. You can check the axial and radial shaft play while you are at it.

If the clip falls off there is nothing to hold the wastegate closed so it hangs open, resulting in zero boost.
A siezed turbo is a possibility, but usually when this happens you will observe noise and reduced boost while it's on the way out.
Check the clip, chances are that is the problem. If the clip is still there you can check the turbo by disconnecting either the inlet hose or downpipe and attempting to spin the turbine by hand. It should turn smoothly and freely with little resistance and no noise. If it's siezed it will be obvious.

edit- a bit too slow.

alright guys, thanks for all the responses. You've really narrowed my possibilities. I'm hoping it's just the clip and it's an easy fix. I'll check it tomorrow after my two finals and let you know where i end up.

thanks again

TD04s are pretty cheap even if the turbo is fubar anyway, just cruise the for sale thread.

alright! here's the deal. First I checked the wastegate clip, that was still there, but blended in with the rust. So today I decided to check the turbo. I took off the downpipe and checked the hot side turbo blades... they spun fine and there was no shaft play axial or otherwise. Confused, I put the downpipe back on and was just going to take it to the shop at this point. Out of hope, I went for a test drive, and to my amazement- boost! I was so excited I went out for a 20 minute drive to nowhere.

The only explanation I can think of is if the y-pipe was loose and taking off and putting it on again fixed it. Or just playing with the blades got them going again. Either way, at this point I don't care, I'm just happy to have a quick car again. 2.0 L non-turbos suck.

I wanna thank you all again for your help. I appreciate it.

Take it easy,
-Brandon

well, the boost went back off again. I'm getting a mechanic to look at it on thursday. I might just order a stock turbo just so they can't charge me dealership prices. Anyone else have any clue what else this could be? Maybe a disconnected or clogged hose somewhere?

This last time i lost boost I went to burger king, turned off the car, and when I came back and turned it on, it wasn't boosting again. what the hell? would a seized turbo just start working again? and then seize up again?

Default No boost

Have you checked your catalytic converter ?? If your waiste gate actuator Is working fine and your turbo is probably also still good. You must have a clogged cat.
