I would assume it means he swapped his gearset/transmission and he is hinting at it with the rpms at a give speed.

That's what I thought. But that looks right for 5th gear.

It sure does. Aren't the final gearing of the 5 and 6 speed generally the same?

Yeah, they are. People often are confused by this. The 6 speed is just more tightly spaced.

well in his case, its a show car. so the driving aspects isn't priority. different strokes for different folks. not everyone cares about handling, some just want to be the lowest, and look good.

And correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the Sti at slightly higher RPM's than the WRX in 6th gear vs 5th when doing the same speed? (Like 100 more or something insignificant like that) I honestly just wish the WRX just had the newer Legacy GT 6 speed with that awesome highway gear!

You're correct that the STI 6th is actually a hair shorter than the WRX 5th. Many people do not realize this. The Legacy Spec B has a nice long 6th gear though.

Is it just me ordoes any other sti owner want to replace their 6th with a taller gear? Is that even possible?

The USDM STI 6MT's have never really had "ideal" gear ratios in my mind. Here are some plots I've made.

For the 04 STI they just took the JDM short ratios and put on a slightly longer 5 and 6 for the US market (gas mileage, etc). The made 1-4 really short and left a big gap between 4 and 5. Here's how it compares to the current WRX 5MT:

So then in 07 they changed the ratios so that 2-4 were a bit longer and better spaced, but they left 5 and 6 the same. This resulted in 4 and 5 now being very close to each other and didn't help cruising in 6. Here's how that compares to the older 6MT and the 5MT.

The best set of ratios in the 6MT (IMO) is the Spec B long gears. They are the same as the 07+ STI for 1-4, but 5 and 6 are longer. This results in nice even spacing through all the gears. 1-5 end up all being slightly shorter than the 5MT, and then 6th is a little longer.
