White 04 STi with WRX skirts, same lip and tint? Lol

Armin, I know you use your 60mm for fruits but anything for car shots? You said you use the 50mm for interior details, why not the macro?

I found the 105micro takes awesome portraits! But haven't figured out anything neat for car details or closeups

my whole first group i was trying at 1/40th & 1/50th... definitely too slow for high speeds. cars always came out blurry...

here is an example when i started speeding it up a bit towards the end of the day...
shot was taken at F13 - 1/125th

i cropped this photo quite a bit to eliminate distractions. since this is my first real panning set (will post more later) i wanted to get some feedback & thoughts.
Yeah, panning is a different animal than car-to-car rolling shots. I actually usually start at 1/125 and go as high as 1/160 for panning. Don't forget that you want to lead the car (like you're sniping it) and make sure your focus point is on the front of the vehicle. You also want to make sure you swivel your whole torso and not just move your shoulders. I actually tend to stand kinda sideways so that I can pan properly.

As far as FFL, or primes, it's all I shoot barring rig-shots. Zooms are for lazy people, old people, wedding photographers, and landscapers. You one of those?

Nice shots, you've composed them well! The outside shots could all use a tiny bit more exposure in my opinion, and your second shot from way up above might need a small white balance adjustment, since the car is looking a bit blue. I also personally would add a little more saturation, but I think getting the exposure correct is the first thing you need to tackle. Good start!

Well, the main reason I don't really use my macro for car shots is because most car parts that I like to focus on tend to be large enough that the macro's small depth of field often doesn't show a part's logo, shape, or surroundings. That's essential the same issue that you're having yourself. There are exceptions of course, but I've found that my 50mm ƒ1.4 gets the job done easier since it's just a faster lens overall to start with.

Yeah, if you move your whole torso instead of just your shoulders, you're able to keep a more steady and consistent pan with the car, no matter how fast they're going. If you're wearing a backpack with all your camera gear, this can also act as a decent side abdominal workout with enough reps

You know, I actually had a fleeting thought the other day...if I sold the 12-24mm ƒ4 and 17-55mm ƒ2.8, how long could I get by successfully with just a D700 (or other full frame Nikon), the new 24mm ƒ1.4, and my current 50mm ƒ1.4 and 85mm ƒ1.8? I'd keep my 70-20mm ƒ2.8 on my D300 since the range is longer anyway on the cropped sensor. Hmmmmmmmmm

Armin, wanted to share one more to get some insight. this was obviously shot a little bit faster... and i forget to photoshop out the dust speckle, which i know you will point out.

cropping ok? i shot out towards the least distracting area of the track. mid day lighting was harsh though!

Well first cuz its an 04 with 07 center caps and all 05+ emblems, the lip, and mostly because he started a thread about the car after he bought it lol. Nice shot btw.

hmmm... I'm not sure if I ever posted these here, but I took these with my old camera (D40X) at 1/125 shutter speed. It's tough creating good composition, so I just center the car. Here's one example:

Don't even dream it, the D700 would own your soul after using it for just a few hours, trust me, it's that good. Forgive me, but FF-FTW. I would, however, hold off on the 24 ***402;1.4 until some come into the used market.

D800......? Armin...?

I have two zooms (70-200 f/2.8 & 12-24 f/4) and 2 primes (50mm f/2.8 & 105mm f/2.8)... and then a kit lens (it doesn't count) I feel I've got a well balanced set of glass

I've got an old 24mm ***402;2 AIS lens that I'd kill to try on FF.
Loved it on film.

Crop isn't bad, but the car could either be a little more toward the right or just make it a tighter crop overall. Couple examples from me:

It also looks like the focus wasn't quite tack-on either though

You've got the right idea on these, but they're all a tiny bit out of focus. What lens did you use for these? If you have VR on it, did you have it on? I would mention something about cropping them too, but you said they weren't edited, so no need

Nice, they have a couple Nikon mugs like that too. Probably should've asked for one for a birthday gift, but I'd probably use it more for water than coffee (since I don't drink too much coffee anyway).

Your car photo is a good example of where not using a polarizer to get rid of reflections can actually be pretty cool. I don't really like the composition though...the R in the grille is a bit too close to being cut off, and it looks like part of the front bumper is already cut off.

Not too shabby. Black cars can be challenging to capture properly to begin with, and then having to capture them while panning introduces a whole new set of challenges entirely You did pretty well though!

As far as compositions go, when it comes to panning shots, I ALWAYS do my crops in post processing. It's situations like this where a lot of megapixels actually DO help quite a bit.

Yeah, the D800 is rumored for a February 2011 release according to NikonRumors.com. And yeah, I know I'm pretty covered as it is with my lenses, but moving to full frame presents new issues, such as selling my DX lenses. I'd still keep my D300 though for my second body at weddings and for shooting at the track (until I can afford the new 70-200mm ƒ2.8 VR II of course).
